Hi,
I'm new to using Autopano Giga, and it's been great so far, but I'm starting to have a few questions that I haven't been able to answer by reading the manual. I'm working on a pano right now that needs for the horizon to straightened. The automatic horizon tool isn't getting it right, and so I want to straighten it manually. I've tried two approaches so far.
1) Tools/Geometry/Horizon
This appears to have the same effect as the automatic horizon button and doesn't seem to allow for manual straightening.
2) Tools/Geometry/Verticals
This option is grayed out and unavailable, as is the verticals button in the tool bar. How can I make the feature active?
Thanks in advance,
Gregory

1) please show an example.
2) in which mode are you working? Spherical, planar or any other?

Hallo Klaus,
Thanks for responding so quickly! I was working in a Cylindrical projection and just realized that switching projections could get me closer to a straight horizon, but of course it also changes much else; Pannini seems to get it closest. When you asked me to show an example, what's the best way for me to provide that? A zip file with low-res versions of the component images and one of the assembled pano? I'd be happy to provide that, but I'd also like to know how to use the manual horizon straightening tool.
Cheers,
Gregory

Hi Gregory!
A screenshot would be ok!

I have attached a screenshot of Autopano with the edit window for the image that I'm wanting to straighten. Note that the vertical line tool in the toolbar is dim and cannot be clicked.

Was the camera level when you shot this pano?
Try switching to spherical projection and then using a combination of the Vanishing point tool and the Vertical lines tool.

Thank you, Mediavets. I understand now that the vertical lines tool is available in some projections and not in others. Using your suggestion, I was able to straighten the horizon with the vanishing point and vertical lines tools. Now I'm noticing a new problem, however. This is the first pano I've created with Autopano where I've seen this happen. The stitching has created ghosting of non-moving objects like rocks and the horizon. Should I start a new thread to ask how to deal with that, since the title question for this thread has been answered? I've posted a new screen-capture, anyway.
By the way, the camera was not level, partly because it was hand-held (can't carry a tripod while trail running) and partly for composition. I understand that it's easier to get everything straight if the camera is level while shooting, but sometimes its not possible to keep it level and get the desired composition. What is the best way to deal with those situations?
Cheers,
Gregory

yes, best to start a new thread.

If the camera isn't level then you'll have to correct the horizon as you have just done.![]()
