He was afraid the wind would blow him so far out of place , that he would land beside the earth and fall into hell? ;-)

had time today to spend some hours watching the event on TV.
its amazing to see hours of 0.7m/s wind and even less and while capsule entry procedure you could hear the discussion on radio between Felix and Joe Kittinger about problems to get the radio up and running and than after they decided to close the capsule and ignoring that 50% of radio capacity has failed a wind gust did press the ballon to the floor - its like an guardian angel did say - hey try it next time...
Georg
PS: its expected that the published planned height of 120.000 feet / 36576m will be finally exceeded to 131233 feet / 40000m to be finally be able to surpass mach 1.1 speed while freefall. Because of the delay from several weeks the day temperatures are now lower and now this height is possible/needed (?) with same size of ballon.

EDIT: wow - what an event. congrats!
highest jump:
from 39045m
longest free fall (wihtout stabilization parashoot):
36500m (from jump to opening of parachute) - 4min 20 sec. free fall
Joe Kittingers record of 4min 32 sec was not broken, but FAI counts this as seperate record because Joes jump was with stabilization parashute
first free fall faster than speed of sound: with 373m/s = 1342,8km/h = mach 1.24
and from FAI not accounted as record: the biggest manned balloon filled with 850.000 cubic meter helium
