CALLING ALL!: Tokina 10-17 Fisheye or Sigma 8mm for best stitching

User Votes

Hello All,

I'm now an Nikonian, moving some of my gear to the Canon bootcamp. I currently use the Nikon 10.5 Fisheye on a D90.
I need a lens for a Canon 7d body.... maybe a 5d one day.

Question:
Tokina 10-17 Fisheye or Sigma 8mm for best stitching results and quality? What does Autopano support the best without stitching errors?

Anyone with a simple input would be very much appreciated.

Thank you again.

Re: CALLING ALL!: Tokina 10-17 Fisheye or Sigma 8mm for best stitching

Ive no experience with the sigma, but use the Tokina on a 60D. I find the lens to be of solid build, and sharp with CA that is readily corrected in post. I like that it is a zoom which provides me with a range of shooting options depending on my desired output. at 10mm i can do 6,ZN for a 100MP equirect or zoom to 15mm and get a 200MP equirect at Z,N, 2x8 (and i dont find the nodal point needs adjusting between these options). See http://lifeinmegapixels.com/ptp/snow12/snow12.swf for two panoramas, one in each configuration shot the other day on a NN4 (opening scene is at 10mm). This is straight out of autopano with no adjustments (except to patch the nadir) so you can see how many/few stitching errors are produced with no intervention.

Re: CALLING ALL!: Tokina 10-17 Fisheye or Sigma 8mm for best stitching

Hi, I use a Canon 5D with the Sigma 8mm and I have gotten excellent stitching results!

I used to use my Canon 20D with a Samyang 8mm... not so good results.

As for the Tokina 10-17 Fisheye, I have never used it,.. sorry.

Best regards,

Bryan

WJH31 & Bryan - Thank you so much for the input. Much needed.

WJH31 - Some rumors on forums, that it's difficult to stitch Tokina fisheye images in AutoPano due to different focal lengths possiblities. Seems like you never had any issues.

Bryan - do you have any sample of your 5D & Sigma 8mm?

Thanks
P
