Hi together,
first of all - sorry for my english but i'm native german speaking.
My question - usually when im taking 360 x 180 panos - i shoot as many picture as possible with my auto head and at the end - i shoot the last one (to the ground) by hand - so the bout is 71 (7 * 10 whit the gigapan head.
If i try to auto discover the pano - i get two panos - with the gigapan importer it's only possible to import th 70 pictures.. :-(
any ideas?
best wishes from really cold switzerland

welcome on forum
(from hotter Austria ... -12degree currently ;-)
as many images as possible.... is not the optimum constellation...
try to reach 20-30% overlap, having more overlap will cause more problems while stitching
so I cant help with optimum shooting pattern for your lens & head combination.
the nadir image: your way is possible. if you use a ballhead, than you could move the cam& head for 90 degree to let show the camera to the bottom,
just raise your tripod for some centemeters (the height between ballhead and the middle point of your lens looking to horizont) and because you say 70 images I assume your shooting with something around 50mm... it could be useful to shoot more than one image for nadir using above method.
if you use freehand its also possible: use a stone or something to mark the nadir before removing the tripod. place the cam about same height of original camera position...
and finally use the autopano option "multiple viewpoints" so autopano does better handle the not perfectly alligned (NPP) nadir image(s).

Georg

Welcome to the forum...
Can you tell us more about which camera and lens (focal length) you are using, and which model of Gigapan robotic pano head?
Are these 360x180 panos being shot indoors or outdoors?
70 images to cover 360x180 suggests you are using a camera with a long focal length lens.
Using a long focal length means you will require a lot of images to cover 360x180 and the FOV of each image will be relatively small (compared to a fisheye). So you will have a lot of seams and a lot of potential for images lacking features for automatic control point detection, for example on plain walls and ceilings.
Furthermore when shooting sphericals it is desirable to reduce the number of images per row as you approach the zenith and nadir to avoid excessive overlapping which can in itself cause problems when stitching.
As far as I know the Gigapan series of robotic pano heads can only shoot a regular matrix/grid of images so you'll probably have excessive overlaps as you approach the zenith and nadir. They have fairly large nadir footprints too.
The Gigapan Import Wizard can only handle a regular matrix/grid of images - so you have to use some other way to incorporate the additional nadir images you shoot.
