supply merlin, Deltawave BT-module and T&C controller with 14,8 volts?

Hi community

im reflecting about an other power supply for the merlin head.
In addition also to Claude`s Deltawave BT-module and the T&C controller.
What do You think about the risk of damage?

If the 2,8 volts more will cause no trouble I would like to combine two Canon BP-511A (Ansmann A-Can Bp511) rechargeable batteries,
each 7.4V 1400mAh

I have those rechargeable batteries and charger in use for the EOS 50D camera.

Are there some experiences (speed, number of pics)

regards, Oliver

Re: supply merlin, Deltawave BT-module and T&C controller with 14,8 volts?

Hello Oliver,

14,8 volts is not a problem nor for the BT module, nor for the Merlin nor for the T&C controler.
Just pay attention:
- not to invert polarity
AND
- remove all batteries inside the Merlin !!!

Running with 14,8 volts will slightly increase the speed of the Merlin !

Re: supply merlin, Deltawave BT-module and T&C controller with 14,8 volts?

Hello Claude,
today I connected 2 of these batteries in series. To my surprise I measured no 14.8V but rather 16.8V.
Is this also OK for T&C control and You`r BT-module? Anyway this are 4,8V more than usual

BTW: I used this cheap charger with this charging cradle and Ansmann A-Can BP511 batteries (instead of the original Canon BP-511A)

Hello Oliver,

Nice to have news from you ... smile

If I can permit myselve, your multimeter is very optimistic .... wink

You are using 2 batteries of 7.4 V = 14,8 V ...
Those are LiPo batteries and can't deliver more except during a few second just after full charge ...

So there is really no problems !

But be serious cool

Your Merlin modification for reducing the foot print (nadir) and increase the flexibility for the NPP is "beautyfull !!!

Could-you show us more pictures ?

Do-you sell it ???

Can't wait !!!

Please have a closer look on the 3 pics below but please be aware that it`s not ready yet.
Some parts are still too big and too heavy and I don`t know if it will work as I expect

Sorry, no. There is only one exemplar and It took a lot of time to make it.

summary after experimental stage finished:

- Merlin head and TC control:  are still working fine with 14.8V (without additional protection)
- Deltawave BT-module:  is still working fine with 8V, downscaled by another voltage regulator (LM7808) with additional cooling (thank You Vincèn)
- Wireless trigger YONGNUO RF-602TX: also still working fine with 3V provided from this regulator circuit (thank You Daniel)

Especially controlled by the TC-handheld the panohead moves noticeably faster.
Endurance test 360° spherical panos, controlled by TC, 2 brandnew fully charged Ansmann A-Can BP511: 3466 shots until standstill.
With EOS400D+EF50 this are 16 panoramas (each 205 shots)

There is an  album on my flickr account now which contains more pictures. Please press "L" to view specific ones on black or browse them here on black

Re: supply merlin, Deltawave BT-module and T&C controller with 14,8 volts?

Really amazing!!!

This make me think that a nice way to modify the Merlin would be to make a modular axis, using the same design for both yaw/pitch...

It was my intention to do so because multiple usage of same parts means less effort.
Partially I have managed that (same drive- and  bearing covers, specific dimensions of drive`s base plates) but please be aware that I´ve designed this device without CAD, simply by the use of caliper, pen and notepaper.
Concerning this matter particularly adjustability was a challenge:

Y-adjustment (different cameras)
- had to be implemented across to the lower drive`s base plate
- more adjustment track than X
- hinged mechanism for storage had to be integrated

X-adjustment (offset/axis alignment)
- had to be implemented lengthwise to the upper drive`s base plate.
- less adjustment track, compensate fabrication tolerances
- defined plus minus10mm

Z-adjustment (different lenses + size of the footprint)
- dimensional big enough for bigger lenses and small footprint
- limited by length of the used rail
- defined dimension without adjustability (not necessary)
