I don't know what the NTP daemon does if it can't access the time server. I expect it can be set to just log errors, and then re-corrects itself when it gets back in touch. Most clocks can stay out of touch for many days without too much drift. Of course if the computer is syncing its clock to the c...

Frédéric, you may be interested to know that I was curious of what you said about shooting while moving was true. It is not. Controlling the Merlin from my serial console, and telling it to move, either by manual or goto, at least at modest speeds, and then issuing :O11 and :O10 commands had no prob...

To add another note, I was surprised that I had to tell APP where the photos were that belonged to the pano recorded in a papywizard XML file. You have to pick the very specific photos. So I put in a request in the Future section http://www.autopano.net/forum/t9050-automatic-selection-of-images-in-i...

Automatic selection of images in import from motorized panohead xml

I just got my Merlin and started playing with Papywizard. It records a log of the position of the photos it took, which is used in APP's Import plugin. I was quite surprised to see that I also need to specify the image filenames, which often means going to an image editor to isolate them. Since the ...

Possible new supplier of crowns, rails etc.

I was looking around on eBay for arca clamp replacements and came upon a new shop, effectively a one-man operation that does custom milling and standard rails and clamps called Henjar photo. Reviews of his stuff are good, so I wrote asking if he might want to make parts for those of us in the Merlin...

Thanks. Yes, I knew about the delay time parameter and had reduced it but I am a speed freak. I've lost too many panos to changes in the lighting or other elements while shooting them. Of course, there is only so much the poor Merlin can do and I may ask too much of it. For example, since it can't s...

Speed, Keyboard, Shooting Profiles and Android

I got my Merlin, my bluetooth unit, my cable and have finally started using Papywizard. I am thankful for this software, and offer the following observations not out of any belief that I deserve support on generously free software or that I have a right to demand new features. Just making suggestion...

I think that's not quite correct, Claude. I think that the Merlin generation 1 JACK (ie. the thing in the Merlin) has Tip and Ring shorted, which is to say it is probably just a 2 pin jack used by mistake where a 3 pin jack should have been used. However, the cable that comes with the Merlin has no ...

Well, the issue with tracking stars is that in any given axis the rate can be extremely slow, even slower than 10 degrees/hour. In that case typically you don't track nearly well enough for astrophotography, but just fine for time lapse etc. It is my guess that if you doubled the max speed of the se...

It may well be. I got a note from the supplier and he has said another supplier you can try for cables is Apex at apex-camera.com. I don't know anything else about them, but I am happy with the cable I got other than it having a working focus press wire, which is hardly a defect from their perspecti...

Well, how big is the Papywizard community? How many downloads do new releases get? I think that gigapans are certainly selling more than a thousand, so it's not out of the question but it does involve a serious investment by somebody. The current Merlin is able to track at sidireal speed (one revolu...

The user's email address is www.2008shenzhen on hotmail, so you can order directly. I realize this has a minor risk with no feedback option, but this is what I did, and the cable did show up in the mail (in the usual 2 weeks it takes from Hong Kong.)

Yes to Arca swiss clamps, and a source of shutter cables

I finally got my Skywatcher/Merlin and have it up and running. Recently somebody here told me the dovetail clamp on the Merlin is not set for Arca Swiss style dovetails, like most serious photographers have semi-permanently mounted on their gear. I am happy to report that while it is not designed fo...

Has anybody approached Suzhou Synta Optical and asked them about what the minimum order quantity would be for them to make a custom version of the Merlin for photography? Perhaps they would even give you the firmware code to modify in that case. Or build one with integrated bluetooth, better dimensi...

No, this is over the entire 200mm image area, not just a zone with some mismatch. The blends in this config tend to be fairly narrow in any event. I was showing one of the sharper sections. There are some worse sections, where the actual blends are.

Yet more learned -- I now see that I can somewhat solve this problem using a feature of APP that I was mostly baffled by before, namely layers. In most cases, making more than one pano out of the images seemed like the last thing I would want to do, but in this case I can get it to render the 200mm ...

Another update: I built the central 200mm panorama at full resolution, resulting in a large file, though the focal length in the exif is wrong. I did a SIFT with the 70mm images, and it put it in the right place, and predicts a pano 30,000 pixels high (which is about right, and 2.6gigapix if I were ...

Smartblending, default settings for pyramidal and transition. Based on past experiments, I admit I hardly use anything else. I will add that the other blenders don't get the invalid bitmap error and thus generate a file with layers. However, the resulting blends are unacceptable, especially when usi...

Some added notes: I tried rendering to photoshop layered file and it finishes the render but says "Critical error, invalid bitmap" The resulting file has no layers and had a discontinuity in it. When I zoom in in the panorama editor, I am able to see the full details properly, it is just the resulti...

Well, I am still having problems getting this to work. I shot a background pano at 70mm, and then shot the central region (the city) at 200mm. I was eventually able to get it to blend after adding more CPs and doing another re-geometry-analysis, but the resulting blend is really very blurry in the c...

[APP 2.0.7 linux 64bit] Crashes while moving crop mark

I fear that 2.0.7 is not going to be much more stable than the very-crashy 2.0.7 on KDE Lucid. This time just while moving a crop mark, it aborted with: AutopanoPro: ../../src/xcb_io.c:385: _XAllocID: Assertion `ret != inval_id' failed. I may sound like a broken record, but until the program has zer...

Another thought: What if I blended some of the sky/sea segments in another panorama program, one that lets me do a careful manual positioning of its equivalent of control points, but does not do multi-row? I could put stripes together in a program like that and import them into APP. If I did this, p...

To be specific, my most recent test was with 200mm long shots (as that is my longest lens not including tele-extenders) and 50mm background shots because that is a prime focus lens I have which is right on this boundary, and perhaps explains my failures. But it sounds like 70mm and 200mm would work ...
