Forum Members...that aren't really forum members - Spam Accounts

I just looked at the list of forum members and was surprised to see a HUGE list of fake accounts that have been set up

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19921098/www.kolor.com%202012-3-14%2011-46-7.png

And this is just the tip of the iceberg...could you not delete these accounts as it doesn't look very good to prospective users of your software if the forum is full of spam accounts.
I know you keep on top of spam messages but think you should also delete the accounts!

Neil.

Isn't a valid email required to register?  It's been a while since I registered here.  Also record the IP address these are registered from.  If the same. you might want to block that IP.

It is extremely complicated to manage that. We changed several time the registration system to prevent that ( with few success yet ).
We'll probably at some time upgrade to another forum system. During the switch, we'll clean all account without any post.

When I see a spam account - I delete it. But I depend heavily on the Report post function, as lately I have no time to follow all the hundreds of posts around here.

Thest best spam filter I have ever used is this one, you need to solve an easy image puzzle, automatic registration bots have not so far been able to solve this and register spam bots.

Re: Forum Members...that aren't really forum members - Spam Accounts

Thank you for reporting spam accounts. Just a note to all helpful users: PLEASE report only one post per spam user - I delete the whole account with all its posts with a single click, but then I have to delete dozens of reports smile Deleting reports becomes more time consuming than deleting spam! big_smile

Fake accounts and Spaming data greatly provide harm to a web owner. It should be condemned and instantly removed from the forum pages. Only quality data and discussion should be there. Being as SEM Consultant i suggest to add only relevant data on a forum.

Re: Forum Members...that aren't really forum members - Spam Accounts

having seen this thread the first time today, so my five cent come something late...

@kolor: please keep in mind that captchas never are secure. We the the spammers see that their bots cannot solve the captchas automatically, they make a "puzzle website" where you can win something of great worth when you solve a puzzle. But the puzzle ... try to guess it ... will be your captcha.
Or they simply use your captcha as "login protection" for their own website and bingo! they have the code.

And email verification is unsafe too. Fake email accounts can be made very easy at gmx, and at all the others.

If you ever like to try another captcha, have a look at this one...
http://www.haifischbar.com/testseiten/captchatest.aspx

It is asp.net, your webserver must be a windows server with aspx support. But i am sure the source code could easily be rewritten for other environments.

greetings from germany
Chris
