Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

I have just downloaded and installed a trial version of Autopano Giga 2.6 (64 bit) on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit system.  I'm running with an i7 920 and 12GB of RAM.  The installation seemed to go OK, and the application opened up just fine.  However, when I went to browse a directory the system crashed.  The window opens, with a default directory and will open that directory and process normally.  However, if I try and change that directory, it will usually open an explorer window, then hang until Windows 7 closes it down.  Sometimes, when I restart, the default directory for browsing has been changed and the application will work in that directory - until I attempt to change the directory again.  Then it hangs and Windows 7 closes it down as "not responding".

When it works it is impressive, but this "feature" does not encourage me to investigate further.  Is this something to do with the trial version?

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

We are aware of that bug that only exists on Windows 7 64bits. It's a Qt issue which didn't support officially Windows 7 until version 4.8.

We already have an internal version of Autopano Pro / Giga 2.6 that has an upgraded Qt framework which solves this issue.
I've put an link below so you can test it. We didn't make it public yet because the Qt involved ( v4.8.0) was just release the same day of our final release date so we didn't get any time to test autopano build over that version of Qt library.

http://ftp.autopano.net/releases/Autopa … -4.8.0.exe

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

So, again crashing during the same operation that involves system dialog ( file open, folder browse, etc ) or in some other places ?
BTW : do you have some uncommon software installed like desktop UI changer ?

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Yes crashes on system dialogue - "folder browse", click on "..." to the right of the current directory, Windows explorer window opens up normally, then "greys out" (semi transparent).  Eventually get a Windows 7 "not responding" window.  Nothing out of the ordinary in the installation as far as I'm aware.  Certainly not a desktop UI changer.  Avast anti-virus running and Protex (Corel X5 software licensing).

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Can you quickly check if you disable Avast anti-virus ?

If it doesn't change anything, we'll setup a configuration with same operating systems here to find the issue ( BTW : which version of windows 7 and which language ? ).

Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit, UK English.  At work now, will try disabling Avast this evening.

OK - disabled Avast and no difference.  Still stops responding when I try to change the folder.  However, having just downloaded and installed Autopano Giga 64 v2.52, it runs OK.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan and Alexandre
I test this "browse folder" funktion from file menu with APG 2.6.0 x64 on my Win7 Ultimate x64. It works all without problems: jump to a dir, select a dir, browse a dir, browse a dir and subdir, with or without all options. I don't use AVAST, I have installed Microsofts Security Essentials MSE  (surprisingly not bad).

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Thanks Martin - in posting your screenshot, you may have unwittingly given a clue.  I didn't have Auto Detection enabled, so tried a few variations.

If I first browse the default folder (Auto detection on) before attempting to browse another folder it will then open other folders normally almost all the time.  I've now tried that approach a few times without it crashing.  Although Auto Detection on opening the default does appear to affect the outcome, opening and browsing the default folder first before attempting to change to another folder was the key.  It's still a bug, but with a possible workaround.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Update.  Provided that I browse the default folder on first opening Autopano 2.6 Giga, I can then change the folder and browse without problem.  If I try and change the folder on first opening, it hangs and is shut down by Windows.  After being shut down, then restarting Autopano immediately, trying to browse the default folder hangs the application.  However, leave it for a short time before re-starting and the default folder can be browsed.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan
I try out the funktion with it's default settings: Only checkbox for "browse subdirectories (recursiv)". All other checkboxes are disabled.
And I haven't still any problems with selecting and changing the target directory and browse it !
So there must be another reason, which makes you this problem ?
Have you checked whether there is a process on your system (security, antivirus, search indexer or something similar)
that perhaps  in some cases slows down the file access or temporarily overloaded the filesystem ?
Do you have mounted network drives or an external disk with power save function ?
I have an external WD-disk, that completely stops the windows explorer until it is waking up from the standby mode (this is MS bs ).
By the way: I found an other possible bug when try to reload a image in the layer list of the editor window - APG 2.6.0 will crash immediately.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Martin.  Autopano Giga 64 bit reliably crashes if I try to change the browse directory before browsing the default directory on first opening Autopano.  By "default" I mean the final directory that I had accessed when I previously used Autopano.  After that I can change directory and browse without any problem.  If I don't do that, Autopano will hang with and without anti-virus enabled, whatever options are selected.  I have also tried with a minimum system boot - no difference.  v2.5.2 works without any problems whatsoever.

I do have external drives on my network, but haven't had any problems previously and have just tried without the network with exactly the same symptoms.  Knowing that you and others have had problems with saving, I suspect that it is connected with support for the Windows 64 file explorer.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan
This look's like a tricky problem.
I have only one more idea: try to check in the registry editor (regedit.exe) the keys and permissions of APG.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Kolor\Autopano Giga 2.6\general\browseFolderName
Have you full access there as user ?
Try to disable the Win7 UAC (User Account Control) and run APG as administrator

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Martin, have just tried your suggestions.  Not quite sure what you mean by APG permissions, but no obvious restrictions.  Had already tried running as administrator, but just tried again - no change, APG still crashes on trying to change browse directory, unless I open the default directory first.

I note that others are having problems with file access/import/saving and suspect that it is down to the Qt framework, which is not as compatible with Windows 64 as the writers would wish!

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan
I mean the permissions on the registry keys of APG in the registry (path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Kolor\Autopano Giga 2.6\general\browseFolderName).
See in the image below, my user, administrator and system have full access. I have a case where something was going wrong while installing a software. Then the
permissions was setting wrong and the software crashed constantly. After fix this everything was fine.
You can try to set manualy an other default directory in this registry key, eg. C:\ and then try again what happens.
But there may be many other reasons for your problem.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Martin
Thanks for the clarifification.  I thought that you may have meant permissions for the programme and not for the user.  Both application and my account have full permissions.  I have even tried creating a new minimalist admin account with clean install and then run as administrator with anti-virus disabled.  No difference.  This would appear to be an APG bug.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan

Other point on APG. Could you create an empty folder on the C:\  then launch APG, open Browse folder dialog box set up the "Choose Folder ..." to C:\ then click on "..." Does it crash ?

Have you installed some video codeck packs on your Win 7 ?
If yes could you uninstall them and try again ?

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan,

After a lot of search, we ended up that it's a more general issue that could affect a lot of software.
See for example this thread : http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debu … -save.html Same issue with google sketchup.

The solution there is a file corruption scan on the disk : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15 … ecker.html
But on some other thread, it could be caused by some external tools that adds some shellextension and cause explorer to crash thus autopano too.
We will post an step by step tutorial on how to retrieve the real cause for these cases too.
But first try the scan.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alexandre,

Thanks for the feedback.  I ran sfc /scannow, as suggested in your link.  It reported "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

I then ran APG Giga X64 v2.6.  As expected when sfc did not find any issues - it hung as usual, when I tried to change browse directory without first browsing the default directory.  I also tried Lionel's suggestion of creating an empty directory at top level on Chmm.  On start up, if I manually type a new directory into the dialogue then click OK it behaves at the time and subsequently - as if I have initially opened the default directory.  But trying to open a file view without first opening the default always hangs APG.

No video codecs installed.  The only shell extensions which come to mind are Avast anti-virus and NXPowerlite.  I'll have to check more fully later.

Some other points noted:-
1) On first opening the application "file", open...." opens the file view then hangs, exactly as as per "browse folder" and "...".  In both cases the window opens, I can see the file structure, then it "greys out" and hangs.
2) "file", "open" works and allows file view after first opening the default directory under "browse folder" or manually typing in a new directory and opening it.
3) "file", import", "cancel" on opening the application also prevents the hang.  Does this access the disk differently?
4) difficult to confirm, but there seems to be a link between the behaviour depending on how long it has been between closing a "working" APG and opening APG again.  If I re-open APG almost immediately (within 30-60s) it does not hang.  Leave it for a few minutes and behaviour reverts.  Could this be a temporary file issue?

Well it's really really weird ...

I've got an idea ... Go to C:\Program Files\Kolor\Autopano Giga 2.6\Resources\UI\ and move all the *.qss file to the desktop
This files are used for APP's style

I know it doesn't make sens but we never know ...

Does it crash ?

OK - moved all the qss files to the desktop.  APG still hangs on file browse and change directory.

Renamed the v2.6 version and copied Autopano_x64.exe (2.5.2) into C:\Program Files\Kolor\Autopano Giga 2.6.  Application ran, still hangs occasionally, but not consistently like v2.6.  Restored version 2.6, now hangs consistently every time.

Opened standarddialogs_4.7.4.exe in Autopano directory, then clicked specified dialogs - did not crash.  v2.6 exhibited the same behaviour as before - if opened immediately after trying standarddialogs_4.7.4.exe it would chnge directory no problem.  Leave it for a while and it would consistently hang.  I'm just about to open v2.6 after leaving well enough alone for a while, then run standarddialogs_4.7.4.exe with v2.6 open and see whther that avoids the hang.  Will post later.

Re: Autopano Giga 2.6 crash, when changing browse directory

Hi Alan
If you say that it make sense how long you have terminated APG before start again, there ist a possibility to look on the system, if there is a important process terminated in this pause: Download Microsoft Sysinternals (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi … s/bb842062) install it an run the "Process Explorer". Then start APG and make a "good" browse without crash. Stop APG after this and then have a look in the Process Explorer, if any process is terminated after a while (first marked red then closed).

An other point: Have you look in the Windows "eventviewer" if there is a message about this crash under "applikations" or "system" ? This could give a hint what's going wrong.

What filetypes are in this "default directory" ? Have you tried to move all this files in a temporary folder so that the "default directory" is empty (inclusive hidden files)?

Have you checked the permissions in the registry keys of APG like described above ?

Have you already installed the service pack 1 on your system ?
