Masking of wanted and/or unwanted objects

Hello all,

without being a heretic I can sy, that one of the big competitors of APP/APG is ptgui.

I just found out, that in it´s newest version it shall have the opportunity to mask either wanted or unwanted objects directly in the pano, without a prior work in PS (or else)

I think, this would be a great feature, that I sincerely wish to see in APP/APG.

@ kolor: I would like to know your opinion on that ;-)

Regards from Germany
Georg

Frankly said: no. I refer to the ptgui website and the pano-forum.net, where it was announced.  I assume, that these announcements are not made, when there is not such feature.

But either which way, this is a feature I would gladly welcome in APP/APG. I really would like to test it, but, to say the thruth here too, I do not like the GUI of ptgui and I really have my problems with the use of this tool. I really had to drill into this and I do not have these time ressources right now.

Best regards
Georg

Hallo Klaus,

they do heavy testing with ptgui over there in panorama-forum.net .

Videos of how the masking works can be found here:

Georg

PS: @ Alexandre and Kolor Team:

Very interesting feature. If you could implement such a nice thing in APP/APG I really would give you three cheers (or more ) big_smile

Re: Masking of wanted and/or unwanted objects

This is something we'll do to, but not for v2.5.

We did something better in fact : a huge improvement of the anti-ghost feature.
It has been showed during the 4st Autopano User Meeting this week-end. See the following example for a self explanation ( v2.0.9 versus 2.5 engine ).
First image is 2.0 series, second image is 2.5 series

Here's the samples about anti-ghost improvement.
Nightmare cases, with moving scene with a lot of big objects moving.

Re: Masking of wanted and/or unwanted objects

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I just wanted to add a voice to this feature request.
I'm in the process of making a decision about whether to purchase Autopano or PTgui and this is a big point in PTgui's favor right now.
Also, the exposure fusion in PTgui works much better than Autopano's for me.
My setup: Canon t2i, Rokinon/Samyang 8mm, NodalNinja 3 MkII, Macbook.

My Pro/Con list for Autopano vs PTgui:

Autopano Pros:
Much Nicer Interface.
Stitches Faster.
More pleasing Stitching Results.
Better Anti Ghosting.

PTgui Pros:
Integrated Masking.
Reads the RAW files from my camera properly.
Does a pretty good job of exposure fusion.

So as you can see, for me, the only things that PTgui has going for it are the masking and the exposure fusion.
Unfortunately, those are pretty important features to me.
I have tried to use the exposure fusion in Autopano, but have not had good results.
The fact that I'm using a manual lens is probably a contributor, but PTgui handles the images just fine.

I also think it would be excellent if there was a way to tell autopano, this is a handheld Nadir shot.
Just use it to fill the hole at the bottom, but don't let it move the alignment of any of the other images.
Something like this: http://www.johnhpanos.com/ptgvpt.htm but automatic.

Thanks for listening.

Re: Masking of wanted and/or unwanted objects

Hi Jeremiah, nice comparison. I like that.
- So, yes, we don't have yet integrated masking. It's the top one asked feature and will be introduced in v3 of course ( among other new technology, but the first one is masking ).
- Exposure fusion, we did some progress with the integrated fusion preview in v2.6 beta 4. In RC1, it will be faster but same feature. Here, I have a lot of feedback on fusion and none is the same : Some lile external solution like photomatix, enfuseGUI or tufuse, other just use photoshop, some like autopano fusion other prefer ptgui. If would need a huge study just to figure out the right workflow just to have an idea of the result of individual fused stack before just thinking of panorama. Not easy, we though it would be easy, but it isn't as there is as many type of fused results as photographer ( it's like HDR, everyone want its style ). BTW : don't hesitate to share any result you want to achieve so we can use it as another contribution to our fused result wish database.
- Raw : we do raw probably as ptgui using a modified dcraw. It's good but far from any real tools like camera raw, lightroom or aperture. That's why we introduced in v2.6 direct link from these tools to autopano. The raw handling is made by these tools and autopano just care about what it is good for, stitching. It's far better this way.
- Multiple viewpoint : it does work really great in autopano and in a totally automatic manner, but there's one feature missing : the way to say, just enable that function on one image. We have to think about a way to say that the software.

Re: Masking of wanted and/or unwanted objects

Thanks for the response. Do you have any idea when v3 will be available? I assume a while yet, since you're prepping 2.6 now?
Will it be a paid upgrade?

Re: Masking of wanted and/or unwanted objects

My main problem with the exposure fusion is that I can't get the bracketed images to align reliably.
The same problem discussed here: http://www.kolor.com/forum/t13439-probl … bracketing

I'm fairly happy with the look of the output, just not with the alignment.
I do think that the sliders in exposure fusion could be more intuitively named.
Though these names don't map to the current behavior, I expect that they do map to what most people are wanting from exposure fusion.
Here are the controls I had envisioned:
Slider #1 "Overall Exposure" or "Target Exposure"
Slider #2 "Boost Shadow Detail" or "Lighten Shadows"
Slider #3 "Recover Highlight Detail" or "Darken Highlights"

I remember asking for the masking feature a couple of years ago on this Forum, but you did not take it seriously then and suggested I used Photoshop layers! I am glad to see it is now on your radar but disappointed to see we will have to wait until version 3, perhaps 6 - 9 months away and have to pay an upgrade fee to get it. On that front PTGui has the edge at least until version 3 beta rolls along.
