Broke my Sigma 10 mm, need advice for a good new lens for panoramas

Hi all,

While experimenting with ways to shoot a perfect Nadir things went wrong. The tripod tipped over and the camera landed face first, so on the fish-eye lens I have....have, a sigma 10 MM 2.8. It broke up in two part, clean cut, but for now not usable.

Oke, 5 minutes to catch my breath and send photos of the damaged lens to a repairshop in the hope they think they can repair it.

I am now looking for a new lens. One with less CA problems then the Sigma, and maybe a more usefull focal length. 10 MM is nice for quick pano's (I
do  2 rows of 6 plus some nadir shots) but maybe not the way to get highest quality. I like the fact it is 2.8 but not always for pano work.

I do most photowork with a Canon 40 D.

What would be a good lens to buy to replace the sigma? Please advice!

A Tokina 10-17mm zoom fisheye perhaps?

Hi Andrew,

The only zoom fisheye :-) Sounds flexible for using it for other things then panorama's. Same price as the sigma and I would trade having 2.8 in for being able to zoom. Zooming to 17 mm is nice as I have a 24-105 to take it from there. http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/show … roduct=329 is positive about it. Though some CA but that was with the Sigma the same thing......
Still thinking, still overcaming the shock..... but you need to move on..... still advice is very welcome.

regards,

Hans Keesom

Reducing the shock for myself a bit, I was able to put the lens back together and now have a lens that does not autofocus and is stuck in 2.8. Will test to see if I can still do a pano.

Dedicated to spheres: Nikon 10,5mm in my eyes is the best choice. Maybe you should also try the new Canon 8-15mm fisheye-zoom. It´s rather expensive and i don´t know it´s optical skills - but i guess it should work on both crop and ff sensors. So mybe a good buy for the future?

For non-spheres i suggest to look for manual Nikon AIs lenses and an adapter-ring for your 40D. The lenses are hardly to beat in terms of optical resolution/sharpness and CAs - and you can get them cheap sometimes.

Besides my 15mm Canon fisheye i use to take four of my 12 old Nikon lenses on my 5D2 for shooting highrez panos - 20/35/85/300mm. All work great!

best, Klaus

example - Canon 20D, Nikon manual 1:1,8/85mm, stitch in APG, about 170° FOV.

I'll +1 on that. Recently acquired one and the flexibility is good so i can choose the resolution depending on the scenario. CA is definitely present but after correcting in adobe camera raw i dont find it to be a problem. Sharpness is good and minimum focus distance makes it quite fun when not doing panos

Re: Broke my Sigma 10 mm, need advice for a good new lens for panoramas

For the moment I went for the Samyang 8 mm. Not very expensive and works oke for fast panorama's. Manual focus and manual aperture is plain fun :-) and oke for panorama's

Tested it with a pattern of 5 at +50, 5 at -10, 3 at -90 and one handheld at -90. Think 3 at +50, 4 at 10, 2 at -90 and one handheld at -90 should work also.
Later I can always look for 20 mm, but then I could also use my 24-105, with some tape around the zoom ring to stop it from creeping.

[Update : the two at -90 were causing the tripod to be visible. So took them out..........bingo, 8 pictures and full 360*180.....will however continue to make them just as backup in case handheld shot goes wrong]
