Like high DR images which look like ordinary images (no HDR look), very wide squeezed rectilinear images can look like ordinary images (no fisheye look) so that this technique is very difficult to promote! Manuel - using the horizontal-line-tool you can do the same inside of APG. It works fine up to 110-120°. I used it up to 150° - had to do heavy undistortion in Photoshop.

Using vertical- and horizontal-line too in combination you can straighten very well - up to the FOV i mentioned above. You wouldn´t nee PTAssembler for that.

P.S.: i would strongly suggest to shoot symetrical - which means in such a case to shoot not only one row horizontal and one row up, but also one row down though you wouldn´t want to see it in the image later. For undistort the shgoot later it´s easier to have a symmetrical shoot.
Or you do one row slanted up and one row slanted down.

How "pleasing the structures are presented" is a question of focal length and the numbers of shots you make.

I agree, this is a must to have feature. I had to postpone using APG for city panoramas until "compressed rectilinear projection"  is implemented.

I have tried spherical and mercator and it is similar to cylindrical with horizontal lines curved.

I doubt you can handle extreme distortions just by choosing an appropriate projection.
I did a shot in an also very tight space using an 85mm and got an angle of around 150° for being planar-projected.
I did it by using the line tools 3 years ago. Had to use VERY massive Photoshopping to correct extreme distortions caused ba the extremely wide angle.

We presented a solution for that too during 4st Autopano User Meeting. It will be part of the new projections modes.

you know how much I am interested in that projection...!!!
