Today I tested whether a 12 pano virtual tour could be loaded, edited and generated on my netbook. I tested this as I want to be able to interactively solve litle things in a tour together with the customer.
I works! the netbook is a 10 inch acer aspire one running on 1 GB of memory. Speed seems just as fast as my i7 desktop. Wonderfull!

There is truth in every joke :-) I am not content with what this 1500 euro machine is delivering. that is why I already looked at cloud computing ( http://www.autopano.net/forum/t11090-cloud-computing )
Makes we wonder whether APG will run on the netbook. As the groups I use are mostly just 12-14 photos it might even work :-) Would be a nice thing for on site. Rendering can be delayed till I am at home again but to see if the groups does stitch oke is usefull. Keep you posted.

update : I am running autopano pro at the netbook at the moment. Processing jpegs works fine. In an hour and 15 minutes time I have 13 groups of 12 photos processed to groups. Rendering will be another story. But if that does not work, I can do that on the I7 machine.
Will do a test with tiff files to see if it can read these.
The why of this testing?
- being able to process things while on location.
- To check settings while on location
- to be able to process things while on tour/holiday

The detection and the creation of groups runs well, though not as fast as the big machine.
For rendering the little machine is just too little it seems,
It did give me the following idea though.
What if we could do our rendering on a machine somewhere on the internet? We do the preparations(detection, correction etc) on our own machines and when we are done everything goes to this machine and returns a few days later. Would save all of us a lot of money that we don't have to put int hardware.
I can foresee a programm like Rsync automaticly syncing a directory from my computer to this server and in this directory I place complete projects in subdirectory, including sourcefile, groupfiles etc.
If the server or a person searching the whole disk for new group-files, would just open them up and start the rendering the pano as requested....afterwards rsync will sync the pano back to my computer........
We pay relative to the size of the pano or the data transported.
Do I have a business model here?
We just need fast internet connections....cause this model is only interesting for large pano's
People of Autopano, do you want to pick up on this.

What is needed is storage connected to a superfast internet connection and a CPU with lots om memory connected to this storage. Will have a look if I can get it started :-) if anyone already has a superfast machine and superfast connection I would like to get in contact

sounds good - but i think it isn`t as good as it sounds: having a real fast even midrange-machine on the desktop definitely is preferable over sending data to a mainframe to compute i guess.
This CAN`T be as fast as a midrange machine which is intelligently and carefully assembled.
I´m not a specialist - there maybe lots of tasks which cam be done via cloud . . but i´m sure stitching and rendereing are not among them. i can imagine cloud-rendering a very big project over night or over some days via cloud might be clever because it wouldn´t slowdown daily work . .

tourmaker is absolutely a nice project. I see many possibilities, certainly because of the price and the hosting they seem to do. Just wondering if they can import a panotour project.....
My ideas are about the rendering part, which is memory and cpu intensive. I found already many old projects which will do the detection and editing* on my netbook but find it 1 GB of memory too little for rendering
