Free Nodal Point question

Watching the video, it seems that "free nodal point" is used only for taking pictures of a wall or plane, where every feature is on one plane.

Some in the forum have suggested its for use in handheld panos and I thought that at first also but it doesn't work well there for me.

Is this true? should free nodal point be renamed to something like "picture of a wall" smile and not used for handheld circular and spherical panos?
