Hello all,
I just received my Merlin back from Teleskop Austria. Thanks to Lajos and his crew.. they really helped me.
Now I start the hard work As I want to take shots this week already, I am trying to get my camera setup woth the newest papywizard 2.1.19.1 for Windows.
My Problem ist the following: I do have a Pentay k7, whitch has an ABE function. If I do use the setting (see picture 1), it happens that the trigger shoots three times. What is wrong?
Has the time value set here any impact on the shots?
The Merlin moves already, although nthe shoots are not yet finished (a rather long exposure, up to three seconds)? What must I do, that the Merlin waits, until the exposure is finished. I cannot get a result with the parameter set-up in PW, although I guess it must be quite easy.
Any tip and help is very much appreciated.
Thanks!!!!!!
Georg

By setting the braketing value to 3, you ask Papywizard to trigger the shutter 3 times. It is up to you to set up your camera accordingly, using the bracketing feature.
The Time Value, here, is the delay to ensure that your camera has finished its triggering sequence. So, if it takes 3 seconds to take the picture, enter a value >= 3. There is no feedback from the camera with the Merlin, so you must syncronize all values.

Thank for the fast reply Frederic ;-)

That ist what I did definitively not!!! So before shooting bracketed I have to calculate the maximum length for all shoots together . That is clear to me now.

The point is clear to me too; but there is one question that occurs to me then. If I look to the generated xml.file, which is in my understanding necessary for the correct import to APG, I can find the marking, that there a bracketed images.
Can APG import the pictures correctly, even it the xml file shows one file only, although there are 3 images (or more), instead of only one picture?
[btw: i do not know anything about xml then]
As I remarked yesterday the import of some 60 shots (bracketed) lasted an eternity (via import wizard), 4 rows x 5 columns (bracketed *3). Is that normal?
Thanks again and greeting to the forum
Georg

Is there only one way to setup AEB on your camera - where one press of the shutter takes all the bracketed images?

Yes, that is exactly ahy I love my k-7. One shot and your done ;-)
Greetings
Georg
PS: The K10D was a little different, But I don´t use it any longer regularely for Panos.

Mmm, in this case, the import filter won't work (as it doesn't when you use an external script using a tethered shooting program)...

It seems we 'simply' need a way of differentiating, in the configuration settings, between the number of times the 'shutter trigger routine' is called and the number of entries written into the XML data file for bracketing where the two numbers are different?
It would be nice if the Papywizard Import filter then assigned bracketed images to stacks - does it now?

Hi Andrew,
this exactly what occured to me and I can only support this idea.
Maybe Papy can differentiate between an "AUTO"-AEB, meaning 1 button triggering the multi exposure and a "MANUAL" EB, meaning the camera has to be triggered for each shot (as before with my K10D). Thus the import xml.file always shows the correct number.
But how cann I now achieve my HDR Basis-photos. I do trigger once and the xml.file is always "wrong". Can I manuall overwrite it (i.e. I had to triple the entries and alter them manually)?
Any other idea??
Thanks again

Yep!

I don't know...

Hello Frederic,
it seems, there is work coming up to you
And I guess, that is not a real good point in time right now.
Nevertheless, that can be inserted as your time allows it.....
Cheers for you and your great work....

This is 'ugly' but I think it would work, as a work-around, if you're desperate.
Shoot the pano with one shutter trigger per bracketed set at each shooting position (which is what your AEB system on the K7 requires) - without a data file - then change the settings for plug-ins to simulation and bracket settings to 3 shutter triggers per shooting position, set a minimal Time value, no stabilisatio delay - don't change the reference point or the number of rows and columns or the order/pattern of shooting - and repeat the pano, 'shooting' as fast as possible in simulation mode, with 3 triggers per position creating a data file.
Use the data file from the simulated shoot with the images from the real shoot when using the Papywizard Import filter. As far as I know the Papywizard Import filter only really 'cares' about whether the number of images defined in the data file matches the number of images you select from the wizard.

Hey Andrew,
this a great idea; quite simple to achieve and seems very reliebale: Gonna test it. I will give feedback here.

@Frederic
Hello once more.
Before I lay open my thought about a possible solution for this "mess", I have to say clearly, that I do not know how to code or write a program. But sometimes I have a moment of mental clarity and maybe this is one:
I am talking about thesame window, as mentioned in my first post of this thread.
Well my idea is:
You could add another counter/field. one should be called : 1. AEB, i.e. you trigger once and an xml file with n(=choice) pictures is generated
2. MEB (manual expoure bracketing) : the trigger is used n-times and an xml file with n pictures is generated
Default value is 1, which means no bracketing, xml with one photo only
Now there should be a dependency between these fields: If value in AEB <> 1 , Then ignore field MEB
If Value in MEB <> 1, then ignore AEB
If Value in AEB <> 1 AND Value in MEB <> 1 , then either Message: are you sure, you will have n times n pictures
or both values are ignored
Maybe this is a proposal, that might be considered as a solution. Please give your comments, especially those who can guess how it can be transposed to Code ;-)
Best regards
Georg

That's a good idea. But to be more simple, what about an additional check box to force the AEB mode? When checked, the trigger contact will be activated only once, but 3 pictures will be generated in the xml data file...
I think this will need some modifications in the core program, and will affect all plugins; so it will take some time to check them all...

This is a question anyhow - i didn´t try but: shooting breacketed using let´s say 3 exposures at each position does Papy´s xml for APP/APG
write 3 times the same position? Which would be correct of course.
Or does it write ONE postition - which would be a problem shooting racketed.
And: what about generating HDR in Photomatix first and using the papy´s xml for APG then for positioning?
best, Klaus

I feel that it is really quite simple - we need to be able to enter:
1. how many entries should be made in the data file (for each bracketed set of images) at each single shooting postion - this could be entered in the Config/Data tab perhaps.
2. AND to be able to set how many times we wish to have the shutter triggered at each shooting position - this already exists as Bracketing nb picts wherever it is needed, doesn't it?
I think that combination would cover every circumstance - cameras that require multiple shutter triggers for AEB, cameras that require a single shutter trigger for AEB, tethered shooting by whatever third party program - all would be covered; as would scenarios we've not yet envisaged.
I think it would potentially confuse things to have the term 'AEB' mentioned anywhere in the Config and Plug-in GUI.

The latter is the issue we're seeking to address - the Pentax K7 requires only one triggering of the shutter to shot an entire AEB image set.

I have to take time to think about all this, as there are different cases. Some tethered plugins can have the number of pictures driven from Papywizard, some others not. So, yes, we need 2 input fields. But I will try to find a good presentation, to avoid confusion.

Hello Klaus,
the way I do read the xml from Papy this is indeed one way to do it. Taking the xml (with one image only) and after doing the hdr in photomatix, importinbg them via wizard.
But I tried it already the other way around (manually) I made the pano first , with three output layers and putting them into Photomatix. It worked rather well, although the length of the calculation was immense ;-) But it worked. And papy really creates one xml with three pictures in the same position, only differentiated by bracketing number.
So both way should work.
