Is it possible to shoot at a stable, fast speed with a 200mm?

Hi All

I really appreciate all the help I've been getting (especially Claude!) but my merlin still wont work properly.  My main interest is shooting gigapixel images using a 200mm + lens at a reasonable speed.

I've recently upgraded the firmware to 02.06.81 which has helped with the speed.  On the old firmware 02.04.81 it took 16min to shoot a 5 x 10 image @ 200mm.  With the upgraded firmware it can take 7 min or 14 min - this isn't predictable. I think 7 min is an ok speed that I can work with (though of course faster would be better). 14 min is too slow, especially when I can sometimes do the same shoot in 7 min.  More often then not it takes 14 min rather then 7 min.

I've got a couple of questions -

1) How fast are other users able to shoot a 5 x 10 @ 200mm?  Is 7 min a good speed or can this be improved?
2) Is your merlin head stable / consistent when shooting with a long lens?  My system works occasionally works fast but often works with a slow pitch, yaw or both.
3) Occasionally when shooting the head just drifts off on the yaw and I have to stop it manually.  Is this a known problem?
4) Are my expectations too high for the merlin head?  Papywizard is a great bit of software but maybe I need to look into different hardware are there stable hardware options?

I'd be really grateful for any guidance on this as I've invested a great deal of time trying to get it up and running but still haven't taken the merlin out on a shoot. I recently bought a Hasselblad H3DII 50MP  with a 210 lens.  My dream is to get the H3D and Merlin working in a consistent stable way (is this possible??!).

Thanks

Will

Here is the log file for when the pitch and yaw are working slowly.

Re: Is it possible to shoot at a stable, fast speed with a 200mm?

If you don't get constant results, there still have a problem with the firmware...

There is not enough informations in the log you sent; could you post the part where the head is moving, ideally in both situations (7' and 14')? Try to see if Papywizard uses the 'alternate' move in both cases.

Question: does the problem only occur when you change the reference position (using the central button, in the arrows)?

Can you also post the log when the head drifts off? This problem can be a communication problem.

Re: Is it possible to shoot at a stable, fast speed with a 200mm?

Thanks for your reply Frédéric,

I'm short on time today but will try and post some logs this evening.  In the meantime can anyone try and answer my questions below?

1) How fast are other users able to shoot a 5 x 10 @ 200mm?  Is 7 min a good speed or can this be improved?
2) Is your merlin head stable / consistent when shooting with a long lens?  My system works occasionally works fast but often works with a slow pitch, yaw or both.
3) Occasionally when shooting the head just drifts off on the yaw and I have to stop it manually.  Is this a known problem?
4) Are my expectations too high for the merlin head?  Papywizard is a great bit of software but maybe I need to look into different hardware are there stable hardware options?

All the best!

Will

I think you should be able to get an acceptable result with Merlin+Papywizard but here are a few alternatives - all much more costly than Merlin+Papywizard, but then that Hassselblad wasn't cheap either.

Pixorb - Papywizard plug-ins available - most expensive, upwards of US$10,000- APP/APG have Papywizard import wizard:
http://www.peaceriverstudios.com/pixorb/index.html

Rodeon VR - middling expensive, upwards of Euros 3,000 - APG has Rodeon VR import wizard - Kolor used a special dual camera variant of this head for the Paris 26GP pano:
http://www.dr-clauss.de/products_e.htm

Gigapan Epic Pro - seems rather 'flimsy'? - don't think it could handle that Hasselblad - least expensive of these three, approx. £890 - APP/APG have Gigapan import wizard:
http://gigapansystems.com/gigapan-epic-pro.html
http://www.360tacticalvr.com/gigapan.html

Yet another approach - use the T&C controller with Merlin, rather than Bluetooth+Papywizard - it is said to run faster:

Yaw control can go 'loopy' if light leaks through the base of the bubble level on the mount and upsets the optical encoder on the yaw servo motor.

Put some black tape under the level (from inside the battery cover) to avoid this potential problem.

iamwill wrote:

I have two Merlin heads/mounts.

I ran 4 trials with each head - Papy/Merlin Bluetooth-N800 connection , Papywizard 2.1.17.

Using external 12v DC lead-acid battery pack.

Settings:
Mosaic 10 Yaw x 5 Pitch.

Stabilisation delay - 0.5 sec.

Sensor (coef, ratio) 1.6x  3:2

Lens (type,focal ) rectilinear 200mm

Shutter time value 0.5 sec

No mirror lock up

No bracketing

Timing results:

Head 1 - 6 min. 18 sec. - 6:20 - 6:30 - 6:17

Head 2 - 6 min 15 sec. - 6:24 - 6:20 - 6:14

Comment:
It is suggested in the manual for the T&C controller that the Merlin head will run more slowly if you use internal NiMH batteries in the Merlin head.

I've not seen this mentioned by anyone else, but....

T&C offers a kit to modify/upgrade the Merlin head to use Li-Ion batteries:
http://www.typeandcolour.de/index.php?t … mp;up=batt

The claim is that:
"With LI-ION batteries is the speed 20 % higher, and 6000 instead of 3000 picture positions compared to standard AA batteries."

Hi Will!

Related to a really professional camera you should consider a really professional head. The Rodeon or the PixOrb as examples are the only really professional ones yet.
You should face costs in a range between 4000.-/7000.-€ then.
Paying some 20000.-€ for a H3DII/50 and a basic set of lenses lenses both head´s prices seem to be not extraordinary high - professional gear never can be cheap!

The Merlin is neither really professional nor is it really fast - but it´s a damn good compromise of price and performance.

I shot some high res pictures using a 300mm Nikon on my Canon and it worked perfect. I didn´t measure the time - but it takes some time
*of course* to walk from position to position with sufficient accuracy.
The accuracy is very good indeed.

As is said already: there´s no alternative to the Merlin at the moment at a comparable price. Josef - the designer of the TC Controller - is working on a head which is faster and more sturdy than the Merlin and will be controllable via PapyWizard or via Josef´s TC Controller.
I guess he takes some months to finish - i´ll get a prototype for intensive tests in May/June.

I realized Josef´s TC Controller speeds up the Merlin remarkably - i´ll do some time and accuracy measures using my 300mm Nikon and will simulate a 200mm mosaic of 5x10 pics using PapyWizard on N800 and alternatively the TC-Controller.

You also should consider a wait-time before every shot to lock-up the mirror and give the combination time enough to end vibrations before releasing the shutter. This also takes time!

best, Klaus

P.S.: Merlin should take a H3DII.
But you should take care not to move the head by hand - the glitch pads wear off very fast then. But you can tighten the srews of both axis easily.
Always move the head just by the motors!

Don't have time to make tests, but Andrew gave his results.

2) Is your merlin head stable / consistent when shooting with a long lens?  My system works occasionally works fast but often works with a slow pitch, yaw or both.

This is not normal... You didn't answer to my question: do you experience slow moves when changing the reference (little home button inside arrows)? Maybe by mistake? I just removed this button, and moved it to the hadware menu, as I often click it when using the arrows sad

3) Occasionally when shooting the head just drifts off on the yaw and I have to stop it manually.  Is this a known problem?

No, it is not a feature! Com. problem?

4) Are my expectations too high for the merlin head?  Papywizard is a great bit of software but maybe I need to look into different hardware are there stable hardware options?

No, I also shot several panos at 200mm (320, in fact, on my EOS 20D)...

I assist Andrew here: stick a tape under the bubble-level. Bright light can irritate the motor´s optical sensor which is nearby under the level.

Re: Is it possible to shoot at a stable, fast speed with a 200mm?

I just started a run of 30°x30° using 300mm on a 20D (1.6).
I can´t set a dedicated number of shots but an angle or start-end points of a mosaic (and spheres of course).
So i chose the 30°x30° and 300mm lens. The TC computes 190 pictures. Tat will take some time because the steps are very narrow using a
300mm with 1.6 - its 480mm then.

I forgot: stab-delay= 1 Sec. 25% overlap.

I´ll tell you how long it takes cool

After that i´ll do a run using 105mm on 1.6 = 168mm - maybe that comes closer to your results . . . wink

I suggest to make a contest using angles instead of shots - as i told: i can´t set a number of shots in the TC.

best, Klaus

Klaus,

To compute/estimate angles for the T&C controller - in Papywizard, use my test settings - configure a 10 Yaw x 5 Pitch mosaic and then read the Pano FOV angles?

I read them as 33.3 Yaw x 25.7 Pitch.

The 30x30° angle using 300mm at 1.6 crop took 15min. with the TC.

I´m now runnig 90x90°=145 shots using 105mm at 1.6 crop = 163mm.

That's for 190 images? If so, then on the face of it it's approx. 2x as fast compared to controlling via Papywizard.

Are you using the T&C Li-Ion internal batteries?
............

Regardless of the lens actually used, can you not configure the T&C to 'emulate' a 1.6x crop with 200mm lens and time that for angles I proposed? -  which should I think result in a 10x5 mosaic.

Then we might have more directly comparable results.

It is on the datasheet:

Euros 199 + VAT (I think that's 19% in Germany but only applicable to sales within the EU).

Isn´t VAT included? (we call it "Mehrwertsteuer")

I think not:

The 30x30° angle using 300mm at 1.6 crop took 15min. with the TC.

1) I use the TC Li-Ion batteries.

2) Yep - i´ll do that.

(sorry to be a bit short - i have to hurry) cool

ran a test now shooting a sphere.

lens:20mm,
camera/crop: Canon 20D/1.6
# of shots: 45 incl. 2 Zenith, no Nadir.
overlap: 25%
wait: 1sec.

time: 5min. exactly

Papy takes 8min @ 40 shots.

It appears to cost Euros 250 excluding VAT (Euros 299 Including VAT) when purchased from the Kolor web store:
http://www.kolor.com/buy/photo-hardware … re=default

But maybe this isn't quite the same item.

As far as the timing is concerned, you can read this thread. If the head is moved in terms of 10 degrees, the shot can be taken less than 5 seconds per shot.
