Hey all. I work with a small research group at Pace University for the Forensic Science department. We are currently using AutoPano Pro to stitch together fisheye images to create virtual tours of crime scenes. Currently we are able to stitch 6 horizontal (row shooting) images and stitch them together without a problem. However on the top and bottom of the panorama once stitched into a 360 tour we have a black hole at the top and the bottom of the image. We've tried taking fisheye shots of the ceiling and floor to alleviate this problem but we haven't had any success as they do not stitch into the panorama very well.
Our set up at the moment is using a Nikon D300 with a Bower 8mm Fisheye CS lens. We have a Giottos tripod with a profession ball head and an L bracket.
We've been using AutoPano Pro for the actual stitching of the images but are using a different program for making the virtual tours. Any help in fixing this issues with the black hole spaces in the panoramas would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time. If needed we can upload images of the panoramas we are taking.

Welcome to the forum.
You need a proper pano head that will allow you to position the camera/lens at the No Parallax Point (NPP).
The Nodal Ninja 5 would be a good choice for your D300 camera:

Then shoot 6-around at about -15 degrees pitch and one up at about +65 degrees. Shooting the 'zenith' shot at +65 rather than +90 degrees pitch makes it far more likely that you will get a good link between the 'zenith' shot and the main row.
That will cover the zenith and leave a small 'hole' at the nadir no larger than the central rotator of the pano head.
You can shoot a handheld shot to cover te nadir 'hole' if you wish - editing/patching the nadir image into the stitched pano in an image editing program that supports layers such as Photoshop.

The program comes with a stitching application but it doesn't work very well. What we like about the virtual tour program is its ability to make a stand alone program for each tour as well as the measurements and other functionalities. If you know any other program that works better (I haven't tried or know much about the AutoPano Tour program) please let me know.

have a look on the Civetta cam, a hi-tec, hi-price solution for recording crime scenes (30k € and more)
they do a second shooting on a different height
this allowes calibrated measures in the 360-scene

The standard forensic 360° camera here in Germany is the Spheron

You can take exact measures in the pano - it´s highly precise because the picture isn´t stitched but a rotating scan.
