Re: Owl Panoramic Head - electronics

Here are some photos of parts I made yesterday.

Worm wheel housing:

Pitch axis motor mount with mounting holes for carbon tubes:

Camera arm clamp showing outer bearing bore:

Cross tube clamps:

Worm inside motor mount:

Nodal point adjustment arm (short) with clamp showing vernier scale:

Gearhead compared to Nikkor 55mm macro for size:

I changed some of the design to make manufacturing less expensive, the gear center distance is now adjusted with shims instead of the offset mounting of the worm wheel. This makes the gear head a two part assembly but is much easier to machine.

Still to be made are all the turned parts and a few adjustment of these parts. Just thought I'd show some progress.

Re: Owl Panoramic Head - electronics

Looks really nice, how long do you estimate before final assembly, completion and final testing?

Re: Owl Panoramic Head - electronics

It's just a matter of having time on the machine, I have a few projects lined up this week but I'm going to try and squeeze the parts in. I should be finished by the end of the month providing I can get time on the machine.

Re: Owl Panoramic Head - electronics

A few more parts have been made, it's been so busy at work I haven't been able to do much. That being said there is only the 90 degree joiner to be made.

Pitch axis gearbox with short camera arm attached. The worm wheel is visible inside the housing.

Re: Owl Panoramic Head - electronics

It looks great! What is the total weight, so far (without camera)?

Re: Owl Panoramic Head - electronics

I will have to weight it to find out. I have it all apart again need to do a few adjustment for the gears.

Here is a first answer from post 36 (page 2),
"Solidworks calculates 2.8 kg right now without electronics. I will be looking to reduce weight as much as possible."

The gearing is hardened and ground worm with a bronze worm wheel, I picked a single start worm for now. If more speed is needed I can change them up for 2 start or 4 start worms and wheels. 4 start would get rotation speed up to 72 degree/sec providing the torque is good enough for that, presently it should be 18 degree/sec. I'll have to machine up the parts hopefully in the next two weeks and then I'll try it. .....

To give an idea, what is ratio of single start worm ?

Also, do you mean you will machine up worm and wheel ?

Looking forward to see more news about this great project.

The ratio is 50:1

I buy my worm and worm wheel, the one machine at work will easily do gear hobbing but the hob is too expensive for low volumes and I don't have the setup for grinding a worm.

Ok, I also though to use worm wheel but didn't find cheap references. (Only expensive price for industrial use. :-(
Anyway, even if I found a "cheap" (affordable) reference, I would be embarassed by doing gear box.
