Forum category organization proposal

Hi,

As Autopano Tour is going to be a real standalone product, I would like to discuss about reorganization in the forum.
My idea is to create a real Autopano Tour like the Autopano Pro / Giga session.

Autopano Pro / Giga
* Using Autopano Pro / Giga
* Autopano Pro / Giga Bug & Discussion
* The future
Autopano Tour
* Using Autopano Tour
* Autopano Tour Bug & Discussion
* KRpano
* The Future

I'm also wondering if we should put together the english language and french language, or should we let that separated ?
As I really like the Merlin / Orion / Papywizard project, should we not create a real big session for this projet either ?

Merlin/Orion/Papywizard
* English
* French

Re: Forum category organization proposal

Well as this pretty much overlaps with what I had in mind in the emails we swapped, I'm for this change.

I'd also like to add that: there should be a single Archives sub-forum in the Bugs forum. Also, probably better to strip the names to something more readable/scanable like:

Using Autopano
Autopano Bugs (subforum Archives)
Feature suggestions

I'd also like to suggest the Annoncements section to be renamed to General, or Official or something similar and it should contain the Open Talk and Gallery forum (which does not justify a section of its own, IMHO), and will also put the gallery higher = more exposure to nice panos for new users = better for all.

As for the FR/EN separation, I'm not really a fan, especially having in mind that French often creeps in and hijacks English threads and vice versa. I'm all for simplicity, so fewer forums = better.

Some of my panoramas, posted in the Autopano Pro flickr group.

(you should have posted this question in French, too!)
___

Aside travels, forums like this one are the best place to learn a foreign language but this is not the forum purpose. Anybody should be comfortable when asking questions (sometimes they are intricate ones) and when reading the answers. In my opinion some French speaking peoples and some English speaking peoples would be disturbed by English and French posts being put together and would be turned away from the forum.

Because things are as they are [...] I would rather extend the French forum to any other language.

An argument for a forum restricted to English could be that there are many general photography or panoramic photography forums in the different languages so that English is enough for a forum dedicated to a more restricted subject like Autopano.

Language questions are complicating a still complex forum (several applications, several versions including beta ones, several OS, several kinds of panoramas, etc) but they mostly import to beginners: is Autopano light out of question?
___

Re: Forum category organization proposal

Re: Forum category organization proposal

Sounds good to me. What will be special about the Virtual Tour Gallery? Will it contain special code that will allow us to upload swf? Because if not, then I'd rather not have the gallery split up into panoramas and tours.

Re: Forum category organization proposal

I'd like the ability to not display the French forums, because I don't speak French, and I suspect that many would want to hide the English forums also.  This means less scrolling.

Or just have the first seperation based on Language.

Re: Forum category organization proposal

The forum has been updated. Thanks for your suggestions. We couldn't implement some of them (eg. the ability to hide French or English forums) but it may be possible in a next major update if we change the forum system.
