Hello, using this combination: Merlin (newest generation) Snap contact, Hähnel HRC 280 connection cable, EOS 5D MKII, ursaminor bt (newest Generation 2 days old, without snap-contact)
causes following problems: on the camera I cannot open the control monitor via joystick, cannot open Menu monitor and there is no preview picture after shot.
Camera release works correct.
anyone else having this problem?? ...or can help, what is to do?

I cant help you there maybe someone else can. Just visited your website. It's very nice. What flash viewer are you using for the panos.
Thanks

Thanks jamma-pcb
, FPP is used in all panoramas, virtuell tours with FPP/xml and the newer tours with FFC.

Hello Chris,

I don't know exactly the way of working of your Canon 5D MkII, but you must know that the Merlin remote release cable when connected will immediately activate the "prerelease" of your camera and this will stay in this situation until the cable release is removed from the Merlin ... this could conduct to an intermediate situation where you can't activate some functions manually on your camera, this is maybe the case for your 5D .
This can also conduct to the discharge of your batteries when the camera stay connected during a long time to the Merlin !
In order to see if this is this phenomen in question, you can simulate that on your camera ...
Without connecting your camera to the Merlin, set the power on on your camera, Half press the shutter release (= "prerelease" situation = camera is focussing and eventually the diafragm is activated) and when holding the release in this situation, try to open the control monitor via joystick, try to open the Menu monitor and try to see the preview !
If this simulation work as described ... you could cut the "prerelease wire" of the remote control cable !
This wire is the wire who connect the central part of the stereo connector, see schema herafter

Hi Claude and thanks for information!
In summary the problem is caused from the Merlin-Snap-Contact.
I dont want to destroy the HRC 280 cable for that reason.
Isn't there a possibility of disconnecting the prerelease contact at the merlin?
Thanks and

versuche mal verschiedene Einsteck-Tiefen der Klinke. Ich hatte sowas auch mal. Liegt m. E. am Stecker bzw. am Zwischensstecker.
Seit ich einen Adapter von Calumet - 3,5mm>Canon Buchse - benutze klappt´s ohne Problem.
sory:
try different states of pushing in the jack. I also had this problem - guess it´s the jack itself or the adapter 2,5>3,5mm>Canon to match the Canon connection.
Since i use an adapter from Calumet 3,5mm>Canon it works fine.

Hi Chris,
Your test confirm exactly what I have explained ...for the Canon 5D MkII
I had also confirmed in the past for my Canon 40D !!!
Sorry to say that the only way to solve it is "cutting the wire of the prerelease", you can do that also inside the Merlin on the "female" plug but this is more delicate ! ![]()
Pay attention that some of more simple camera's need to have the prerelease just before the shoot itselve ... and this is the reason why the Merlin has this wiring for the camera remote control !!!
This behavior isn't realy perturbing for the majority of the users, except that it could drain accidentally the camera batteries !

Hi and thks for all tips!
Got my changed BT-Modul from teleskop-austria yesterday. The good news, connection is working as it should
and using the snap-contact from BT-modul instead of the Merlin-snap works fine too. ![]()
Don't have to modify any cables or contacts for use with my EOS 5D MKII
All functions of the EOS 5D MKII are working correct! ![]()
So in summary the higher price of the BT-Modul from teleskop-austria is worth the money in my case!

Hello Chris,
Happy for you that all is working fine now. ![]()
Only the version 2 of the "Ursa Minor" is equiped with a "camera snap contact", and this one allow the triggering of the "prerelease" and the triggering of the "shutter" SEPARATELLY. So this will give indeed no continuous "triggering" of the "prerelease" contact like you have with the Merlin snap contact ...
That's the explanation why ... ! ![]()

I have the same camera and my 70-200 IS was also continually focusing / Image stabilising.
My solution was quite simple: Open the remote control cable. There were 3 wires - shutter (red in my case), focus (yellow), ground (white) - checked by an eletrical multimeter. I cut the yellow wire. The shutter is still working, but the focus or IS is inactive (so I need to focuse before I take the panorama).
