Hi at all,
In the last days I had much trouble to connect my bluetooth-adapter to my MacBook and configure Papywizard.
I got a lot of help - thanks!
I`d like to special thank user "" for his help via email the last few days!!! Danke Josef
For all Mac-user witch want to use their MacBook to trigger the Merlin Pano head with Papywizard - here is a small instruction how to do it step by step.
I hope this will help to avoid days with confusion and trouble like I had ![]()
p.s. my mothertongue is german so the screenshots are with german words..... the version of PW I use is 2.x
First of all you have to connect your bluetooth-adapter to the Merlin and power them. On my version, the adapter flashes twice every second, this means - no connetion to an other bluetooth-device.
Then you have to go to your bluetooth-system configuration and add a new device with the "plus" button left below.
You have to do several steps. with my device it only worked with typing in the password "1234". This was a little bit strange to me but never mind - it works.....
If you had implemented the bluetooth-device it looks like the first picture
If you mark the device by klicking it and go to the round button right of the minus-button below you can choose at the drow-down menu something like "edit connection"
Then a new window opens and you can see further attributes like the second image. Below you can see "path" - this would be very important for the following step. Better you write it down or keep it in your mind. Above you can find the MAC-adress of the device. You will need it soon too!
Now open your Papywizard - go to "settings" or "preferences" and go to "hardware". A new window opens where you can find in the first line "bluetooth".
Below you need to fill in the right MAC-adress of your device. Ignore the "search" button!.
Now, the following lines are greyed out so you cannot fill in the path I told you in the last step to write down. Therefore you have to switch in the first line from "bluetooth" to "serial". Now you can fill in the correct path of your device.
Now, everything should be done to connect the MacBook to your pano-head. Now got to "hardware" - "connect" in the programm line on the top of your screen and after a view seconds there has to be a sucessfull connection. You can see it by changing the little pic on the right bottom of the program window.
Now you can do the pref`s according to your camera sensor and so on......
I hope my english is good enough to understand the steps.
nice shooting!!!

To add to this:
Once you have the connection added, you can use the OSX Terminal app to check the firmware version of your head.
using Matze's example device of /dev/tty.PapyMerlin-DevB-1, in the terminal you would type "screen dev/tty.PapyMerlin-DevB-1" (without the quotes obviously)
You will see some random characters return
If you then type ":e1" and hit enter, the head will return you firmware version, e.g. mine returns "=010981"

mine "=020581"

I read that there is a firmware to upgrade to 020681, is it necessary? is there a Merlin firmware update (for the Mac)?

Hello Jean-Pierre,
- Yes ... "1234" is the code for the BT module and this is necessary to give to the system only one time, the computer will store for later use ....
- Yes ... a Mac work "definitivelly" beter with a small external BT dongle ... I have no Mac at disposal for investigage why ! but this is a fact !!!
Why did-you say " i will try to update the firmware later" ?
What the firmware version you have for your Merlin ?
Could-you give us more informations about your configuration, I will incorporate into our Users Database and it will be very usefull for us to help more if necessary. You can send me the details by direct E mail !
Have a look on the database here:
