Last night I shot a matrix of 3 rows by 6 columns for a total of 18 images.
The order of shooting was the following (i.e. I started from the lower right):
[pre]
18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13
7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
[/pre]
Telling APP2 to recognize the set as "row/column" doesn't work -- is there a way I can force APP to accept these images as "row/column"? Or do I need to edit the EXIF data to change the timestamps? If so, what is the presumed order that APP is expecting and how does it establish that?
Michael
P.S. I tried renaming the images, but that doesn't seem to help

AFAIK APP/APG when detecting control points automatically does not 'presume' any order it just seeks matches between images.
Now if you were to shoot a pattern compatible with the Gigapan Import filter - which you did not - then you could use that to tell APP/APG the order of your images.

How is the order determined? By timestamp? or by filename? What if I remove all the EXIF data -- what will it do then?

Removing the exif data and renaming the images will do the job. The GigaPan stitcher loads the frames alphabetically, so, if you shot the images in rows, they can be numbered sequentially, then choose the correct import grid, or number them A1..., B1..., C1..., etc., then import as a GigaPan with the Rows grid - in your case it looks like "Rows from bottom up".
The caveat to numbering the frames sequentially is that, when shooting rows, all rows begin on the left, so number accordingly.
Hope this helps.

Our order is also alphabetical. So by renaming the sequence so it match one the gigapan shooting sequence will do the job.
