newbie question: is this equipment correct using with my Mac?

Hi,

I´m new, so let me introduce myself:
First of all, english is not my mother tongue, so sorry for that. ......
Recenty, I saw gigapix-pics on gigapan.org and I´m very interested to do this too.
"normal" virtual 360 pano-pics with fisheye are no problem with my NP-device. This works fine.
So I tried my first gigapix-pano freehand an with tripod with manual stepping pic to pic.
Now I read something about the Merlin motorized pano head and now I have some questions:

1. I want to use my Canon 40D + 70-200/2,8 L IS. All in one with approx. 2.5kg. Can I use this combination and what I have to do to avoid damage on the gear and motor?

2. First I want to use my MacBook with OS 10.5 instead of the nokia remote. The MacBook has bluetooth too. So is it true I only have to by/download these components to start the first shot?

from http://www.teleskop-austria.at:
-Merlin (internal number mont-fot-mff-tr) http://www.teleskop-austria.at/prod.php 159€
-L-holder (internal number mont-sin-fot-nn) 49€
-BT module (internal number foto-blt-mer-hu  BLTm) http://www.teleskop-austria.at/prod.php … ntz-blt-hu 99€
-latest version of papywizard

what about the shutter release control between Merlin and EOS? Which kind of cable do I need?
At teleskop-austria I have seen a BT module (internal number foto-blt-mcr-hu   BLTc) with "EOS-exposition" only useable with URSA Minor Plus 3.x software for 133€. Would it be the better chioce instead of the one above?

Is this combination a good way to place the tripod, run the MacBook, insert a big card into the camera, teach the Merlin an let them run while I sit in the sun an take a good cold beer? :-) This sounds fascinated!!!

sorry for my english and thanks for your support.

Greetings from Regensburg/Germany

Matthias

NO - from forum I've info that the 99€ one is ok. The BLTc is not available yet (info from Lajos two days ago) and will be interesting with new & advanced merlin with to go function with is only interesting for telescope & star-finding-software via pc will be interesting.

about shutter release control between Merlin and EOS (my info is focused on EOS 400D model):
(stereo/mono - dont know) audio 2.5 mm male to male cable should fit.
my canon manual says that following wired canon remote-control fit - so you can compare to your EOS: RS-60E3.
If this fits for your EOS too, the 2.5 mm male should also work. on merlin side its 2.5mm.
finally: I'm also searching still a release cable for my merlin to EOS400D, because the Merlin I got was used and with this package no Merlin-Canon cable was included... (thanks for your help Lajos!!!!)
searching I found e.g.: http://www.danto.de/shop/Lautsprecherka … abel1.html

PS: 2.5 kg for merlin should not be a problem, finally its basically made to hold telescopes. I read about 4kg (optical vision ltd info about merlin ...)

PPS: found this in form about release cable: http://www.autopano.net/forum/t4794-low … papywizard
regards,
Liebe Gruesse,
Georg

Hi Mattias,

Welcome on board !

1. I want to use my Canon 40D + 70-200/2,8 L IS. All in one with approx. 2.5kg. Can I use this combination and what I have to do to avoid damage on the gear and motor?

Really No problems! For your setting (Canon 40D with the 70-200 mm) no modification necessary, maybe  that the Bolts of the Merlin have to be tightened to avoid  slippage!

2. First I want to use my MacBook with OS 10.5 instead of the nokia remote. The MacBook has bluetooth too. So is it true I only have to by/download these components to start the first shot?

Yes !
Except that the Merlin is out off stock at TA ...
The "BLTm" is OK and a "special price of 89 Euros" is given for forum members (please specify) ... Since a few days an alternative exist, this is the "Deltawave PapyMerlin BT module" Ready out of the box and Plug&Play, the cost is 40 Euros + shipping and is availlable immediatelly by sending a Email to me.

what about the shutter release control between Merlin and EOS? Which kind of cable do I need?

For your Canon D40, You will need a "Hahnel Remote Shutter Release for Canon DSLR HRC 280" ...
http://www.hahnel.ie/index.cfm?page=dsl … amp;pId=18

Your english is excellent !
Have Fun !

Re: newbie question: is this equipment correct using with my Mac?

The 40D has a N3 pin connector.
With this : http://www.calumetphoto.de/ctl?query=CA … rch.Search
+ a 3,5>>2,5 adapter, + the original Merlin cable can trigger the camera.
But there are no Merlins at TA I think.
Good luck !

Hmph.  Why's this the first time I've seen these cables posted?  Not sure if it's worth the time/work savings.  several have bought a cheap shutter release on ebay, cut off one end and soldered it into a 2.5mm jack.  Does remove the possibility of something going wrong between various linkages.

thanks to all for your quick answers!

Yes !

damn it.... do you know the delay or any other shop in euro-region?

Did I got you right - the "Deltawave PapyMarlin BT module" replaces the "BLTm-Module" so I can save money bying the new one or ist it additional?

this connects the Pano head with the camera or the BR module with camera?

Hi Matthias,

damn it.... do you know the delay or any other shop in euro-region?

Yes, in the UK they are in stock ! Have a look on the english wiki
http://www.autopano.net/wiki-en/action/ … king_mount

Did I got you right - the "Deltawave PapyMarlin BT module" replaces the "BLTm-Module" so I can save money bying the new one or ist it additional?

The Deltawave "replace" the BLTm, this is the one OR the other ... not both 2!

this connects the Pano head with the camera or the BR module with camera?

This connect the Pano head with the camera and the firing is initiated by Papywizard ! ( same for Hahnel and Calumet !)
To connect directly the PC to the camera you will need a "wired" USB not a BT (= tethered shooting...), this can limit the "portability" for "in field" actions.
