Merlin head internal camble connections

Hi there everybody,

I was setting up the Merlin head to allow the proper mount of my EOS 40D on the pivot point, and while shifting the position of the upper assembly to allow for more clearance for the camera body, I made some mess with internal cable connections.

I thought I had correctly written down the original configuration of them, but when I connect them all again, the head simply doesn't work.

That would be great if someone of you could help to put everything in its correct place!

Thank you!

Cheers,
Mauro

I don't know if these photos could help.

All connectors appear to be keyed anyway.

I agree; I don't think you can invert some connectors. Are you sur you didn't cut a wire (power supply)?

Hi Mauro,

Glad it's working again.

I would like to see a photo of how you modded the head - by moving apart the two major cast elements - others with 40D's may like to see it.

I'll gladly post some pictures after testing the setup in this configuration, just to check if the settings I found are correct!

We all have a big interest in your modification (pictures ?)

Do-you use Papywizard ?
How do-you connect the Merlin with the PC or Nokia ? (Tronisoft module, Teleskop Austria module, other or self made...)

Thank-you in advance.

Re: Merlin head internal camble connections

Hi Claude!

I still haven't found the perfect no parallax setting for the 40D. At the moment I'm using my old 350D.

I purchased the Teleskop Austria bluetooth module and works fine with Papywizard on Nokia 770 tablet. A perfect out of the box solution: in 3 seconds after the pairing, all was ready to start the shooting work.
I definitely recommend it!

When I will have more time, I'll write more ant try to resolve the mounting problem with the 40D!

Cheers,
Mauro

Re: Merlin head internal camble connections

Hi Mauro,

Very happy, at the end, to have find a user of the "Teleskop Austria BT module" ... Could-you describe  how it has been set-up, how it work etc...

For "the perfect no parallax setting for the 40D" have you had a look on the links I send you in a previous mail ?

http://www.autopano.fr/wiki/action/view … %A9canique

And some photos of my 40D in place (same page):

Those pics are of my 40D and with the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 Zoom, and this settingwork perfectly!

Re: Merlin head internal camble connections

The links you provided do not seem to work. Can you please check them out and post again?

About the settings, I'm not satisfied of the vertical alignment with the center of rotation. I separated the vertical bracket from the base and secured it with only 2 screws.

Do you have a shot of the nadir with your lens to see if I have the same alignment as you?

About the BT module, I bought it because I wanted an out of the box solution. Lajos was very kind to provide an excellent customer service and received the part 3 days after the order in Italy (and I ordered it on December 30!)

I just plugged the cable on the Merlin head, activated the Bluetooth on Nokia 770 tablet and completed the pairing with 0000 code. Then I just loaded the Papywizard and the connection has been immediate and never lost after.

Believe me, it was just as easy at it seems!

Re: Merlin head internal camble connections

Hi Guillermo

First at all ... welcome on board !

You should pay attention to some things ...

1. Buy the "right" Merlin :
Today it exist 2 models, one "normal" and one "go-to" !
The "normal" is the first model who has come to the market ... This only allow the "direct" control of the camera (your 40D) This is the model you should buy, this also the cheapest one +/- 150 Euros
The "Go-to" model is more recent and has NO "direct" control for the camera! This model is also more expensive +/- 240 Euros. This model has built-in "go-to" function for the astronomy and this is without value for Pano photography, or Gigapixel photography or Timelapse.
In the Wiki, you will find some web site where you can buy the Merlin:
http://tinyurl.com/c7u9ek in English
http://tinyurl.com/dbu6vy in French
Teleskop Austria is the cheapest  (price without tripod!)
Of course you can search yourselve on the web.

2. Merlin-Papywizard interface: you need an interface for connecting the Merlin to your PC (or Mac or Nokia...). The cheaper interface was the Tronisoft 9751 interface but the Tronisoft company is actually in big troubles at the moment and don't deliver the orders within acceptable delay.
So this is a big problem actually to find something in replacement, nervertheless some possibilities exists:
- Teleskop Austria sell a very nice solution working out of the box, this is the "Ursa Minor BT interface":
http://tinyurl.com/bfe22g, the negative point ... this is not a cheap solution !
- I am busy to study a lot of alternatives, stay tuned on the forum ... in a few hours I will post a small summary of this study (preliminary conclusions) in the subject:
http://www.autopano.net/forum/t4809-mer … -interface

3. You will need also a special cable for connecting your 40D, because the Merlin will come with a cable who is only OK for the smallest models of Canon! I buy myselve on Ebay a remote for the 40D, this one have a female connector where you can plug the original cable delivered with the Merlin:
http://tinyurl.com/b8x6gj

4. You can of course allready load the PAPYWIZARD program to try it in "non connected mode" (simulation, this will give yo an idea of the interface :
http://trac.gbiloba.org/papywizard

I think that I have summarized most of what you need and I stay at your disposal for further explanations...

Claude,

Thank you very much for this steep-by-steep explanation!

The cable that comes with the Merlin, will work with my Canon PowerShot G9?

AFAIK the G9 lacks support for either wired or IR remote control, but maybe you could modify one of these devices?:

Hi Guillermo and Andrew,

Mediavets  wrote:

Andrew this is not correct... the Canon G9 has a "RS60-E3" connector (the same as the Canon light serie, 350, 400, 450D.) roll

Guillermo, as such, your G9 can be controled "directly" by the original cable coming with the Merlin ! smile

I think you will find that it is the G10 that supports the wired remote, but not the G9.
