Merlin/Orion/Skywatcher instruction Manual confusing or wrong?

I don't doubt this has been addressed before, but I can't seem to locate the topic in a search.  My apologies if this is repeating a topic.  The manual for the multifunction head seems to have ass-backwards instructions regarding the use of an external power supply.

As shown in the picture below, the manual identifies the upper hole as Aux Power and the lower as DC Power.

http://content.screencast.com/users/johnriley/folders/Jing/media/4b781036-662b-4250-b368-9eac0a9f4066/00000024.png
It says Aux is to power other devices and DC power is the place to put external power from a battery or a AC adapter.  It gives a very grave warning (beside a bomb with a lit fuse!) to NEVER plug external power into Aux or the batteries may go BOOM.  So, the instructions are clearly telling me to put any external power into the LOWER hole.

However, on my head, the upper hole is labeled IN and the lower OUT.  If I look at the downloadable manual for the newer GOTO version of the head, the photo in it shows the holes labeled the same as mine and even points them out as DC IN and DC OUT.  See below.
http://content.screencast.com/users/johnriley/folders/Jing/media/e18c5d2b-ee72-4dab-88f3-8800b89a650a/00000025.png

The GOTO mount's manual goes on to say:

If you are using a portable battery like the Orion Dynamo
Pro, use the Dynamo’s supplied 12V DC power cable (cigarette
lighter plug on one end, standard 12V DC power plug
on the other end) to connect the battery to the 12V “DC IN”
(Figure 4b) power jack on the side of the mount. Make sure
the Dynamo’s power switch is in the “off” position when connecting
cables. Power the TeleTrack AZ-G on by pressing the
red on/off switch to the “on” position
AC Adapter
In addition, the mount can be powered by an optional AC
adapter rated at 12V DC, 1000mA, tip positive. Plug the adapter
cord into the “DC IN” power jack for operation. Power the
TeleTrack AZ-G on by pressing the red on/off switch to the “on”
position.
Power Output
Unlike many mounts in its class, the TeleTrack AZ-G Mount
will provide power output for accessories like digital cameras
or camcorders. It accepts a DC power plug (tip positive) and
provides 12V DC power output. To power a 12V accessory
with the TeleTrack AZ-G, simply plug the accessory’s 12V DC
power cable into the “DC OUT” (Figure 4b) jack on the side of
the mount.
Caution: Never plug an external power supply cord into
the “12V DC OUT” jack accidentally. This may damage the
AA batteries inside the battery compartment, and possibly
damage the mount itself.

This is exactly the opposite of what is in the manual that came with my head.

sad Should I believe the manual that came with my head?  Or should I believe my common sense, which matches up with the description in the OTHER head's manual?  If the manual is that FUBAR about something that can potentially KILL the head, can i believe anything else it says??

Re: Merlin/Orion/Skywatcher instruction Manual confusing or wrong?

There is no problem: Aux is the RJ12 connector, at the bottom. 12V is available here (we use it to power the interface). They warn you not to use it as a power supply input. I admit that it does not come to mind to do that, but...

So, the manual is clear: use DC IN to power the head from external batteries; you can use the DC OUT to power something else in this case (it may also be availabe when internal batteries are used, but I'm not sure).

I think the drawing in the manual with "AUX Power" and "DC Power" is definitely wrong.

I always connect external battery the "IN"-jack.

Sorry, I didn't notice the wrong 'AUX power' picture!

Re: Merlin/Orion/Skywatcher instruction Manual confusing or wrong?

Just used it with ext. power and cable in upper position; "IN".
I removed the batteries, not sure it's needed.
All works fine

Merlin Instruction manual I found here:
http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/swts … 0mount.pdf

also "AUX - not in use" is not correct for my Merlin. I can plugin the Handcontrol on both HC and AUX working properly.

Re: Merlin/Orion/Skywatcher instruction Manual confusing or wrong?

I am having the same problem.
The manual says "always use the lower hole" (see the first post here in this topic for more details), but your experience says use the middle hole.

I did some measurements and from them it looks that it shouldn't matter as the middle hole contacts are connected with the contacts of the lower hole.

So far so good, but this from this post it seams that is could be a serious issue:

Any suggestions?

Re: Merlin/Orion/Skywatcher instruction Manual confusing or wrong?

I concluded to the same result. I will by the DC adapter in couple days, then I test both holes. If there will be no more posts from me then it didn't work.

Okay,
I have the DC adapter now. I have removed the batteries and plug the DC adapter in the middle hole and everything is working perfectly.

Claude, I put a DC voltmeter on the battery terminals when external power was plugged in and show no voltage.  I expect that the DC input pugs on the Merlin are of the disconnect type, which disconnect the battery line when external is plugged in.  It would be quite a hassle if this were not the case.   I don't think you could charge the batteries in the Merlin using the external power, even if you wanted to.

Do you have information that says differently?

If you want to remove the batteries before doing external power in case of failure of the disconnect, you would only need to remove one pack though.
