interface with usb server, usb router and laptop question

I was thinking i would use my laptop because i want to use remote contorl software for the rebel xsi. would it work if i used a usb to ttl converter cable into a usb server on top of a 50′ pole with a usb router on the ground conected to a laptop running papywizard? the other thing i may do with this is put it on a tethered blimp

usb server http://www.silexamerica.com/sx-2000wg.html

usb to ttl cable http://www.makershed.com/ProductDetails … directed=Y

router http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications … CatId=2667

Thanks in advance for any insight on this

Re: interface with usb server, usb router and laptop question

Chris,

Why make it so complicated?

Blutooth has sufficient range to provide the connection from Papywizard running on your laptop to the Merlin head.

For USB connection to the camera you could use any of the many USB extender systems, such a this:
http://www.keene.co.uk/electronics/mult … code=C5USB

Or am I missing something?

Re: interface with usb server, usb router and laptop question

don't really need it to be wireless on the 50' pole but i may also want to put it on a blimp and that could be up to 500' . don't know if bluetooth can go that far

Then in this case you may be better of with KAP type rig, or the sort of rig people use on model helicopters, using RC - rather than Merlin?

Re: interface with usb server, usb router and laptop question

i have a rig like that for the blimp the point was more that if i am going to buy a wireliess interface that will allow me to run the remote control software from canon i might as well have a link that would do the distance for the blimp as well even though i don't need it for the pole

Re: interface with usb server, usb router and laptop question

What do want to achieve with the camera remote control software over a wireless connection?

Hi Chris,

The answer for the bluetooth is "NO" ... with the best of class bluetooth (BT class 1) you can go to +/- 300' but both bluetooth' (emitor and receiver) should be "BT class 1)!

I presume that you want control your REBEL XSI with "Live View Function that can be used remotely via a computer through the EOS Rebel XSi’s USB connection and Image transmission to your PC" !
In this case the answer is "YES" but for the control of the Merlin with Papywizard you should use a "Usb to RS232 converter cable"  and not a "Usb to TTL convertor" connected with the Tronisoft module 4207 who is connected directly on the Merlin !

Nice project !

Re: interface with usb server, usb router and laptop question

thanks Claude!

in fact i have a usb to serial converter in the drawer collecting dust. I called the mfg of the usb server and the stock range for that is about 100' good for the pole but i guess ill need some signal amplifiers and better antennas to make the jump to the blimp for high shots. most of the time 100' is plenty

Or just use the USB-TTL cable directly, in place of the Tronisoft interface. Adding the 2 resistors should work (but I didn't try this cable...).
