Hi again,
Just got some equipment for putting together the cable from the Head to a Canon 30D camera.
I've read the other post about how to cut the remote cable and wire the jack plug to the end the Canon cable. The only problem is that i have 3 coloured wires and two connections on the jack plug. Not wanting to blow up my camera I'm hesitant to proceed without making the correct connections.
Out of the Canon remote lead there are 1 x yellow, 1 X red and 1 X white leads. Can anyone supply the wiring for each of the wires to the jack plug.
Thanks

Don't worry, you can't blow up anything. There is one common, and 2 contacts (1 for AF cycle, 1 for shutter cycle). Just try to figure out which is which ![]()
To use with the Merlin, you will have the AF and shuter contact wired together, so when the Merlin close its contact, both cycles are triggered, like if you push the camera button without waiting half way.

Thanks for the reply, I've got the cable working and found that the white is commo0n and the red and yellow should be wired together.

Yes, you should be right (I've rewired my manual remote control for my 20D, yesterday, and I think it was the same colors).

Hi irpano
I have a 30D and am considering buying the merlin head and rest of kit. Before I do I'd like to find out more about the NPP alignment for 30D, as I will be doing mostly cityscapes with a lot of close objects, so I need the NPP set correctly.
Did you make any adjustments to get the NPP precisely aligned?
What lenses do you use with it. I only have L-series f/2.8 lenses (16-35mm f2.8L, 28-70mm f2.8L) and would prefer to use these. Do you by chance have either of these?

Mark,
Do you plan to shoot sphericals or partial panos (less than 360x180)?
Typically, how close are your 'close objects' in a cityscape?
This post provides the information that will help you determine whether you can set your Canon 30D on the Merlin head at correct NPP without modifying the 'crown' (rail mount) on the head.

The size of your camera body and lens will also determine the max. positive pitch (upwards tilt) you will be able to achieve without the camera body hitting the Merlin head.

Hi Mediavets
Thanks for the reply. I'll be doing partials (say 180 x 120) and full 360 x 120-180 panos. I can live without the full vertical tilt as I don't find pictures of the sky too appealing :-). That said, where space is tight, I may need to get almost vertical to get in the tops of tall buildings.

Mark,
If you are using a manual pano head now what are the upper rail settings for NPP with your to lenses - from centre of upper rotator to tripod screw socket on camera?
Max. vertical clearance between centre of vertical rotator to battery compartment cover of Merlin/Orion head is about 125mm.
So you can probably figure out the max. vertical pitch you will be able to achieve with your lenses on the Canon 30D with the Merlin/Orion head.
.............
You certainly won't be able to achieve NPP with the battery grip attached to the Canon 30D with standard 'crown' (rail mount).

Hi Mark,
A summary of the adaptation problematic is found herafter:
http://www.autopano.fr/wiki/action/view … 27appareil
And a PDF document herafter:

Mark,
The Canon 30D body will mount at NPP without modification of rail mount of the Merli/Orion head BUT those lenses of yours are quite large - it may be that the diameter of the barrels of these lenses prevents the camera/lens combo being mounted at NPP without modification of the head.

Hi Mark
The 30D alignment is about oké.
Your 50mm will work and a 17-85 allso without crown modification.
The bigger L-Lenses won't fit the body without crown-modification.
BTW made a 140x80 degr with a 450D with a 17-85mm @50mm and the result was good. (about 2,2 gig rect. but it has to be cropped because the left and right are stretched too much and the reflections of the windows)
84 shots..through dubble glass
Not a great view IMO but client want's it.....
About cable: buy a cheap 30D/5D remote on eBay and you can use the suplied Merlin Cable.
The eBay one has a minijack female, the Merlin is male on both sides

Can anyone recommend a brand/seller on ebay. I've looked at dozens and don't see any with a minijack female

Try CALUMET. I bought a female-->Canon 20D adapter which i use with Merlin/Orion´s male-->male cable.
It´s part of a cheap asian radio-remote release they sell - at least here in Germany.

I bought one from them last year - the jack in the handpiece didn´t work . . .
on a second one it sometimes worked, sometimes didn´t . . and it´s too long for that purpose.
I bought a Canon original after that. But it has no jack for the Merlin´s connection in the handpiece.
Regarding the price and the fact, that Calumet has 10 stores in the US i strongly would suggest the Calumet thing. It´s smaller than the other one and you don´t need a long cable with handpiece for that purpose. In combination with the Merlin´s own cable it´s long enough even for 600mm lenses on the Merlin/Orion (if you would put one on it . .
)
best, Klaus

Sounds ideal - a much neater solution.
