Can not read panorama file properly (on Mac)

Hello,

I am using Autopano Pro now for more than a year, and I have to say: Panoramas are fun! But now I have encountered problems with some of the files I have created.
Currently I am working on quite a couple of panoramas created from Nikon Raw files. I save all panoramas in 16-bit Tiff, and most of them are working fine. However, there are two of them (as of now), which simply can not be opend properly on my computer, a Mac Pro.

What happens? Well, the files can not be read by most of the software I am using, especially Aperture. I have tried both 16-bit and 8-bit TIFF. Aperture reads the 8-bit file, but refuses to read the 16-bit. The message is "Unsupported file format". The 8-bit file is read, but the far right end of the picture is cut off. The space for the respective pixels is reserved, but it's simply black.

I have worked more intensive on one of the panoramas. I have saved it in 8-bit and 16-bit as well, and my software reads them as follows:

  • •  Apple Preview: reads and displays both files
  • •  Adobe Photoshop Elemts 4.0: reads none of the files
  • •  Lemkesoft GraphicConverter V6.3: reads the 8-bit but not the 16-bit
  • •  Apple Aperture: displays the 16-bit pictures as Miniatures, but not as preview, the 8-bit is shown as preview, but again the rightmost portion is missing

  • Can it be that the picture is simply too large? the second one is 34981 pixels wide, the other one has 35634 pixels.
Has anybody in this forum made a similar experience, and is there a solution for this?

    Thanks for your help

    Hi Markus!

"Can it be that the picture is simply too large? the second one is 34981 pixels wide, the other one has 35634 pixels."

What PS Version do you use? Pictures more than 30000px you must save as .psb and open them in CS2 or higher.
    PS-Elements can´t handle them.

    best, Klaus

Yes it could be too large. Most Windows programs I tried to view huge panos in fail, dunno about mac. Do as klausesser said, and if that doesn't work, then tell us their width and height in pixels, as well as TIFF compression type, file size, and file system.

    Hello All,

first, I am not from Switzerland, but I am living in Grevenbroich, a small town near Düsseldorf in Germany.

Well, about the Photoshop version: I use PSE 4.0. I don't have any CS version, and I do not intend to procure one - I believe for me it's like buying a 40-ton truck to transport a bread roll. Anyway, the software I want to have the image in is Aperture, not Photoshop. On the other hand, the GraphicConverter is a tool which is known to open everything which just looks like an image, thus there must be something more behimd this problem.

I have also tried to reduce the size of one of the images to a width below 32768 (i.e. 2 to the power of 15), but this does not work as well. I'll go on trying to reduce it further, and I'll report about the success (hopefully).

    Best regards
    Markus

in the render-options set saving to .psb - i don´t know the GC can handle it . .

Dealing with such big pictures - panos or not panos - you really need to use Photoshop. And 4GB RAM as minimum - better 8GB as minimum. Also big diskspace - preferably from 80GB up - reserved for PS and/or APP on an extra (!) drive.

    best, Klaus

Re: Can not read panorama file properly (on Mac)

    Hello Klaus,

Hardware should not be the problem, the Mac Pro has got 2 Dual Core CPUs, 7 GB Ram, and in total 2 TB of local disk space - all tasks related to photos take place on a 1 TB disk which is used to about 2/3.

Storing data in PSB format does not work, PSE 4.0 is not able to read these files (?)

Whatsoever, it looks that I have found a solution now - storing the files in 16-bit PNG format seems to work. Currently I am re-creating all panoramas from this series (14 files, created from between 2 to 17 single photos). I'll report out when I have finished this exercise.

    Thanks for your help
