Hi!
As well as i know that it is not it´s most important task to shoot sphericals, thinking about having it fixed on a long boom or high tripods to do it raises the problem of the real huge base of the Merlin-head.
So i examined it´s construction a bit closer and think about "cutting" pieces of it´s cast-construction off . . . .
Not that there´s very much win in that - but here every mm counts in narrowing the vertical angle using wide-angles and/or fishes.
Does someone have the same idea and gone a step further with it already?

I've got mine today and I will look, how to pimp the Merlin to get more clearance to crown and bottom axis
Tom's lathe/mill will help to make some parts

I wonder whether you will need to replace the crown with your E-510 to achieve correct NPP?

That's the advantage of small body DSLRs - like the my Nikon D40 and your Olympus E-510 - for the Merlin head.
I guess there's little/no incentive now for you to work on a replacement crown. ![]()

it looks that setting the two parts a lil bit apart is easier than a new crown
the quick and dirty way is just taking off the 4 screws (red circles), move the vertical arm outwards one hole and fix it with 2 instead of 4 screws
I would prefer making two alloy distance blocks which puts the vertical arm outwards and make it stable again
and a pom block to get the silver shell holded again
Problem: Tom's mill/lathe will be shipped back, it has some problems, so we have wait

Hi Paul!
I guess nabbing away just ONE centimeter on One side will do absolutely fine using a 20mm@1,6crop for spheres.
Just by removing the battery-hood gives a bit more down-angle and a smaller footprint.

Has anyone though of getting a 3d print design for a new case altogether. Just reuse all the parts then inside. Will draft up some designs if anyone wants to spread the cost of an actual 3d model made for manufacture. With enough of us doing a bit we could form a new company and make everything inhouse. Just a thought....
look up 3d printing it creates layers of plastic to form a model (even moving parts like cogs, screw holes etc) the precision is just outstanding.
What we need electonics whizz kid. eprom programmer
Software programmer
Designer (i can do that)
MArketer (do that for a living)
Costs of materials (china imports and parts)
Final production mould.
The way things are going with google earth it will become quite a big thing in the future..
Any one up for it.

My experience with 3d printing is it's great for prototypes but too expensive for production. Never looked at it for low number production since the process has essentially no setup cost to be spread over multiple units.

China has low costs. If it was uk based it would be a rip off. Will look into though.
