There are some free stitcher applications like HugIn or PanoTools and some. "F"?

Welcome to the forum...

What camera do you have and what sort of panorama would you like to be able to create?

Re: Autopano for people with cheap crap cameras and no tripod please

As I have trouble with my hands and my attitude, I can only really use point and click cameras. I have a Fujifilm Finepix L55, 12 mp pointyclicky camera, in a very fetching purple. Whilst I am in the USA, my tripod is at home in England.
Cheers.

OK - I doubt your camera supports a fully manual mode for shooting, so you may as well try with full auto mode initially.

You may be able to shoot some landscape panoramas with a field of view of less than 360 x 180 handheld.

Aim for approx. 30% overlap between adjoining images.

Here are some tips for shooting without a tripod:

http://www.autopano.net/wiki-en/action/ … a_panohead

Just download and install Autopano Pro and have a go.

The best way to learn about creating panoramas is by doing.

Send your photos to me and I will stitch them for you, meanwhile giving you some tips on how to make them.

panoramas without tripod etc is possible but you are asking a bit for the impossible. We didn't buy all that gear just to show off.

We're all poor these days

I usually just have a compact digital camera in my pocket when out and about and no tripod etc.

Autopano is pretty forgiving in my experience but if you're shooting in Auto mode hand-held then I would avoid some of the snazzy indoor shots you see on here and stick to just single row panoramas of landscapes where (slight) inconsistencies of exposure differences and parallax errors (camera moving off a fixed point for rotation) are easier to sort out

even doing 360 degree panos (single row, landscapes) is perfectly practical with your kit IMO

Personally I would take them portrait orientation in general especially if covering a wide angle and go for about 30% overlap. Look at the whole scene before starting to photograph to note the highest background and nearest foreground to be included and then make a conscious effort to keep the camera level all the way round. Also if the sun keeps going behind clouds then out again, try and take all the pics with the same light.

With a trial and error approach to stitching and blending you should be fine - personally I hardly take any single image shots any more as I think a good pano of a landscape is much better than a set of single 4:3 images !

Anyway, I would endorse the earlier comment - download a trial copy of APP and play around with it (that's how I got started)

best
Martin

It looks good for a first attempt.

The 'stepping' along the snow covered top rail of the nearby fence is a result of parallax because the camera/lens was not rotated around the No Parallax Point (NPP), probably unavoidable in this scene when shooting handheld with a  simple compact point-n-shoot.

When shooting handheld try always to rotate your body around the camera rather than rotating the camera around your body.

Re: Autopano for people with cheap crap cameras and no tripod please

Yeah, thanks for that.
I was aware of the fact that I was following an arc as I shot, I understand the principle of parallax, and obviously now know its consequences. It was a miracle that I got it all done I was standing in a foot of snow at minus 5 but it was such a good looking day I could not have missed the opportunity.
I was pleased with the result.

I would like to be able to have a gallery of panos on one of my sites, especially when I get better kitted up. Can you reccomend a gallery(pref freeware) that I can include on my site? Hosted by me, not just linked?

Thanks for being bothered, this is what is good about the internet, when people are bothered to contribute.

Cheers

Hmmm. I installed wordpress to try this. Nothing I could do, include consulting the forum etc. could get the upload directory to contain the directory and xml file required? I installed the plug in manually and automatically from the site to no avail. Pity, I was keen to have it working.
If anyone knows of a gallery other than WP version, that would be great,

Cheers
