Hi....  It appear its not apg that doesn't like me, but rather it hates my RAM, well I hate that too.. lollol Its not enough to render the images as they were so I had to reduce them to 20%.. I have already captured the image at TIF small.. I thought it might have been ok but apparently not.. and I cannot put more RAM into this Mac... sad

The issue now is.. after reducing the image size, even though I have Excellent RMS, I had to straighten the pano but it not all straight.. You can see the poll is straight but the wall is not.. If I make the wall straight then the poll and other things are wobbly or crooked.

I am sure I am almost there.. I just have to understand apg better... So, how do I fix the straightening of the pano..

Destiny..

Other than using the Verticals line tool in the Panorama Editor, make sure your pano head is level and that your camera/lens (camera sensor) are at right angles to the pitch arm?

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hi Andrew.. It was all level.. I am pedantic about that... I even bought the Magic Balance to make it easier... It was perfect... But the image is not only wobbly, it is distorted..  When I used the images before I reduce them, I did do not get this issue, it was perfectly straight.. But the images are too big for me to render in apg with my RAM... So its not the level or apg that is the issue.. It was the process of reducing the images size but that should have worked since I reduced them by a % factor....

I need to try another way to reduce the size..

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hi..

It appears it was nothing to do with reducing the image size as such or apg having issues. I think the issue is due to the xml code not equating to the reduced image size ... I have just tried stitching the same smaller images but this time without the xml code to assist in stitching the featureless areas of the ceiling.. It is only to be expected that I would have holes in the pano but its straight and the stitching is perfect.. It also processed very very quickly..

So now I have to look at the xml code to see if I can edit that in order to maintain correlation between the reduced image size.. i am assuming that this is the issue... but it might not be...

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hi Destiny
I ask Nikon since years to change the firmware and make it possible to set EV 2 as maximum step for bracketing.
Hope that there is a inofficial firmware "modifier" that will do this soon.
Sometimes, I have this problem with misaligned images too with Photomatix, when using with batch job.

What Klaus couldn't know as an Canon shooter is, that you can save the images from the D800 in RAW with 14bit color depth.
If you are shooting in RAW 14bit mode, it makes sense to convert this images to TIFF 16bit to prevent color loss while converting.

big_smile Canon provides 14bit RAW too - of course. But in praxi it´s better to convert very sensible and save as 8bit TIF. The way you treat them during conversion
is more important than the number of final bit-depth. In no way you can make a single image from 14 bit to 16 bit . . cool
You can do that only using bracketing via HDR and saving 16bit/ch after tonemapping - as already said.

lumelix wrote:

Specially when working with Photomatix, I do this always with 16bit TIFFs as input files. Eg. with View NX or Capture NX2.

Using a bracketed set of images there really is very little to no difference feeding Photomatix 5-7 8bit or 16bit TIFs.
A backeted SERIES of 5 or 7 exposures of 8bit/TIF or even JPGs anyway has by far enough information. 16bit of each image is just redundant.

Re: apg does not like me :(

I guess you could alway remove the EV steps in between.. I am happy with this image in many ways, but if I put the EV up to 2, the light might have blown out so much... Appart from that I am really happy with this and of course the big hole in ceiling... lol

I am personally hoping that Nikon have a Focus Stacking option in the pipeline. big_smile

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hi Klaus
Yes, all this is generally right.

But then we must ask why we shoot in TIF 8bit, as shoot JPG 8bit with a slight compression is near the same.
And the amount of datas is so much smaller then wink

I found some advantage with 16bit TIFFs from 14 bit RAW in the sky, specially for fine gradients.
When convert to 16bit, there is no loss in the colors. Converting to 8bit is lossy.

But the 16bit TIFFs from the D800 are really big files wink

don't shoot me down in case it is a poor idea as I don't know the Seitz head (as I have a lowly NN) but I use elastic hair bands to bring the remote release cables tight in against the camera/pano head as a cheap solution.  Just don't tell the wife as she can't fathom out where they keep going wink

Re: apg does not like me :(

Yes I know.. Two of them are really long.. I asked above somewhere if anyone knew of a cable clip to organise them.. I saw one on a video but I do not know where to get them from.. I am also peed with Nikon and the way they designed their strap.. I want to be able to take that off and on really quickly but its a pain to get on. Terrible in fact.. It needs a secure kind of clip.. Normally I put the cable in more but for this test I had issues. The cable on my D90 are shorter and less of them.... I can fix them anyway when i do the nadir patch.. so not really a worry.. The main test is in using my 35 mm with apg...

Re: apg does not like me :(

Then why does it stitch so much better without using the xml code.. To me it should have worked.. I just don't get it Andrew.. I do not know what to try next.. You are the guru with this so if you do not know then I  guess I cannot stitch the images until I have a better Mac.. So I am stuffed with it all..

I am going back to playing with my fisheye and making sure I have the NNP set right with that.

No not me.. I get into trouble shooting people... lol Well, I actually thoguht about that but after seeing this I threw them all away.. roll yuck...

The thing I saw was a plastic clip that had a slit down the tube of it.. They were set in multiples. You just push your cables down into the slit and pull them out when you have a need to.. Quick and easy.. but I cannot find them..

Re: apg does not like me :(

I look at the  last image I rendered and even though it still has issues, its just amazingly better than my first efforts.. All my success in this testing is thanks to all of you guys who helped me so much with advice and supportive suggestions.. A big thank you to you all for all your help.. I never get much time to do this kind of thing when at school so I am so grateful I managed to get to this stage of knowledge and understanding... I have also gained a big appreciation for apg for its ability to stitch hand held images so quickly and accuracy.. I have also realised that its not me that apg doesn't like, but rather my RAM..

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hey.. Now back to the fisheye.. Still using my D800, it rolled back to DX mode.. Using my new found knowledge, I checked the NNP to line it up and found it was out by 1mm.. I feel for a fisheye that is not a lot but using a 35mm it would be.. Its really strange seeing the poll bend left to right with a powerbox on the distant wall.. I moved it without looking at the increments until the edge of the powerbox remained an equal distance from the edge of the poll.. When I checked my setting on my VR Drive, I saw I had it set for 30mm.. At one time I would have had it set to 31mm but I must have felt that 30mm was better..  The Live View is supposed to be as you can see via the view finder on a D800. You cannot do that with a D90, its not true Live View so you have to use the view finder which is more fiddly..

I have set it to 9 bracketed shots +/1 1 EV, to see if I can minimise the light blow out.. Its doing its thing now in my downstairs dungeon... wink Since its a fisheye I will not need the xml code unless I have issues.. I really want apg to succeed with my fisheye as well as PTGui does.. AlexJ said it was out and he was right but not by much.. wink

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hi Destiny
You don't feel right wink
To set the NPP correctly is much more important with the fisheye than with other lenses !! Why?
The bigger the FOV of a lens is, the bigger are parallax errors if the NPP isn't set correctly.
And specially with fisheyes, where the NPP is near the front element, misalignment have the biggest influence.
If you use a 300mm or 600mm tele, the NPP is absolutely unimportant, there the center of mass is the point.
On this very interesting website you can find animated grafics with the Nikkor fisheye, where you can see what happens:
http://www.pierretoscani.com/echo_fisheyes_english.html

You can see also that the focus setting also is very important and have an influence on the position of the NPP !
This means that you have to adjust the NPP for different focus settings seperately. Or always use the same focus setting, e.g. ∞

Otherwise, with fisheyes there isn't one NPP, it's dependent of the angle of the light beam.
So you should check the NPP near the blending (overlapping) zone of the images.
This is the reason why I prefer the methode with the laser pointer.

But you can use also LiveView and magnification, to check if the NPP is set precisely there.
To much theory ? So check it into the praxis wink

Re: apg does not like me :(

Its ok Martin.. I always feel better after your advice, probably since I understand what you are telling me..,  but not sure I understand how to set the NNP using a laser.. I have a laser light on the yellow tripod head you can see in the pano image, but not sure if it will be ok for this.. I need to read the process again... That is really interesting about the NNP changing.. I have never been told that before.. I mostly open it right up anyway, which seems to be the way to go with the 10.5 fisheye....

I did 8 bk shots with my fisheye... The first pano image has been stitched using apg, not bad at all big_smile. The shadows are soft and nicily bended.. The ceiling light is not so blown.. It stithed very well and very quickly.. Alex J was right.. my NNP was out and he will be pleased to know that my tripod is no longer jutting out.. I guess I might get it even better with a laser light, not sure, but there is always rum for improvement.. This proves you are right Marin.. Just 1mm and it made all the difference.. I am a bit over my cable being in the way so I tied them together with wire.. I think the VR Drive needs cable clips on the side of it to click cables into it.. That would make all the difference..

The second pano image I ran though PTGui.. Its said Excellent and did a great job too..

No probs with my RAM so this is as much as I can hope for with my iMac until I can replace it... roll

Re: apg does not like me :(

Hi Destiny
The methode with the laser pointer is a little bit complicated and technically.
Try out the methode using LiveView and magnification and take care in the
blending area of the frames after you set the focus.
While magnify in Live View you can see the smallest parallax error if there is one.

Re: apg does not like me :(

The nadir footprint with apg is a lot more acceptable now.. Not as neat as PTGui but it uses a different process anyway.. As long as it doesn't stick out I am happy... big_smile

I will stick with the method I know then.. Its works and I understand it.. cool

Re: apg does not like me :(

Depending on what tripod you have and maybe you already have tried this, but you might want to make the tripod legs very short and extend the center pole. This will cause what you see of the tripod a bit smaller. As things are not so stable you don't want to use this in all situations.
