George, I am also surprised by the drama the debate on DPI can give sometimes. But I do reject the notion of constructing it. I can't be blamed that that the idea DPI=D/I turns out to be too much for some.
I am sorry I shared my annedotical experience on it here as it turned out not everyone is able to read the smileys or see the yoke of it. Now I could make a yoke here but nah, lets not do that ;-)
Hans - read carefully what Georg stated. You are putting my professional skills in question by telling this typical amateurish and insulting bullshit:
"Bummer, I warned everyone not to try to explain it logically to creative/publishing/mac people and still I did."
You´re saying that creatives, publishing and mac-using people better should not be adressed logically. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE???
Let me guess: you´re NOT a creative, you´re NOT in the publishing business and you´re NO MacUser - whatever that might tell which platform someone is on, that´s nuts.
This is such a hair-rising amateur-speach . . . . i better don´t tell what i think about such a behavior.
I quit here discussing with you - defihitely.

ok its not a matter of dimension, its a matter of filesize. finished.
Ok - tought it might be related to the dimensions and not to the file-size. Some Photoshop versions ago - as said - there was a common use for 4C print-files at print-facilities to alter the *dimensions* of a document by altering the dpi . . . as i remember that was related to some hardware-RIPs (Raster Image Processors).
I´ll ask a professional pre-press man - he will remember it better than i do.
I mean i can remember that Photoshop those days was limited it document-dimensions rather than in data-file size. Guess it was version 3 - but i´m nor sure.
But maybe i´m not remembering that correct - as is stated several times. I´ll check that.
best, Klaus

Klauss,
I never stated creative people or publishers or mac users better not be adressed logically and I reject your suggestion about this far far far away from me.
Au contrar, they are very much able to so and when I can't understand them while they explain their thinking to me, it is my limitation.
You however seem to totally miss that I am refering to DPI and the fact that it is rather difficult to explain the fact that it is a derived unit to people who know it only as just a unit.
So yes, I agree with you, it is problably better if you do no longer discuss with me.
Now back to my workstation who seem to be finished detecting the first batch of panoramas.

Do you really think YOU can tell a photographer about dpi or ppi what he doesn´t know? ![]()

Whatever you´re "referring to" - we are dealing here with images, pictures, photographs, ya know?? They base on pixels, ya know? For rendering and/or printing images we use ppi and/or dpi, ya know? Guess you forget that sometimes . . being so busy to " refering to DPI and the fact that it is rather difficult to explain the fact that it is a derived unit to people who know it only as just a unit"
That´s not "difficult" at all - it´s just a different theme! In German: "andere Baustelle".

We´re not photographing, rendering or printing IT, Hans - we´re dealing with photographs and we render images. That means PIXELS. Printing PIXELS we use DOTS.
Klaus
and: yes, i seem to wasete my time trying to explain to you what images are all about when it comes to outputting them from an application . . .

Not IT as in informations Technology, but IT as DASS. It not an abriviation but a word like "the", "a", "an", "her", "his".
I will, once again, make a note to myself not ever to try to explain anything to you anymore Klauss.
Sometimes, like the 3D thing with Destiny, I agree with you that you have a point. However, the point sometimes seems to be so important to you......please try to keep things "Gemutlich" here....

Now we are at a whole different level of debate.
If we must stop saying or expressing everything that might be an insult to someone somewhere with long toes, then there would be nothing left of what we call western democratic society. We would end up in a very dark situation that europe has painfull experiences with.
What is an opinion to one, will be an insult to another. Live with it, grow yourself a thicker skin. I see lot's of things every day that are insulting to me, like people believing in a god for example. I have learned to deal with it, live with it, get over it.
If you like to read up on this you can googel on "Dar recht zu beleidigen"
Cheers, have a drink from me.
