I am sure that it is trivial when you have only a few images, but I have 815 images in my most recent stitch and an added image just disappears among all the others and I can almost never find it to move it into place.

Welcome in the forum.
In the layer editor, the images can be sorted by name, focal, speed,... or grouped by layer. It is usually good enough to find a picture. You can also use the control point editor to find and select it. Indeed, if you add an image in a 815 images pano, I guess you want to link this picture to other one by adding control points.
