Hi all,
one of the silly ideas i have is making a "walk in panorama". So i have to partition my spherical panorama into slices that can form a dome. Some sectorial slices to be layd onto the floor, some slices to form the dome. See my fast done doodles.
The software should be capable to generate the slices for varying diameters of the dome, varying paper width and sheet length or paper roll.
Now i am searching a software that can read large multi-gigabyte .psb files and can write the slices as .psb too. Any ideas?
Greetings from germany
Chris

Bingooo, here is the second doodle. Exchanging german umlaut ü to ue in the filename did the upload.
The sectorial slices for the floor:

LOL.. None of that will actually work...
.. but did you know that apg exports as psb files..... Why do you need those anyway.. you are talking about a huge file format... better for print.. not web media..
If you want to test a walk-thought, then capture multiple panos within the same location just a meter apart.. Reduce the image size and limit the zoom.. You can actually set the code to goto the next pano automatically so it becomes an automatic warlk-through.. The fist time might not look great but after that it should be fine..
What you really need is to borrow Googles street pano gear and chuck it all on a trolly and pull it around a room.. LOL...

What about big file format for deep zooms? Didn´t you ever do deep zooms? We have panos and tours which have 80000x40000px resp. about 300MB up to 1,2GB filesize on the server.

Hi Chris!
Drop me a mail - i´m experimenting with comparable features actually.

@Destiny ... i am not talking about a virtual panotour, i am talking about a real panorama. Something similar like an igloo you can really walk in, and the inner walls are covered with printed slices that form the picture. Hmmm, my doodles must have been to bad ![]()
Something similar like this...
http://cms.uni-konstanz.de/uploads/RTEm … 84.jpg.jpg
or this...
http://www.malta-as-metaphor.eu/de/installation.html
I said similar. Not only a cylindrical wall, but a full hemisphere for the upper half of the sphere, and the lower half layd onto the ground.
Up to now a silly idea. But if i find a software that can slice the sperical pano .psb file, a sponsor for paying money, some craftsman that build the igloo, some place where it could be located, and, and, and ...
@Klaus: let us talk about this when we meet in Wuppertal

found two more examples that illustrate the idea:
http://nachrichten.ch.msn.com/kultur/%C … %B0-format
http://www.derwesten.de/kultur/das-taeg … 21080.html
BUT .. full spherical, over you a igloo with one hemisphere, under you the lower hemisphere on the ground.

I know some guys in Zuerich who did such a thing in Singapore for the City of Zurich - had 16 beamers projecting a hemisphere in a quite big pavillon.
I can ask them for some photos.

If you are talking about an installation with something like a pandoras box - that would be too expensive. And i don´t want to make a video installation, it should be real photo.

arr... I see it now..
Yes, that is doable... Good luck!
I can't wait to see it done... Perhaps you will inspire us all..
Acually, I do not know why I did not understand, looking at your last images.. I was thinking of makining up a backdrop prop just like like for capturing Virtual Tours of caravans and cars indoors.. Although what you are doing is different, but the image make me think...
I passed on it for being too expensive.. I was looking at canvas prints.. I even found a great mob to print to canvas... I was going to use a marque frame to drape the canvas over...
I also realise what you need the psb format for... For this, its perfect.. ![]()

Yes, ink jet printing, paper roll 1 by 19 meter, and let´s go wasting expensive material and commodity...

Thank you for wishing luck. And i am shure it can be realised. But ... until now i dont know a single software thet can do the required slicing. Maybe i must make the software myself (i have my roots in software development). In any case it will become a long time project.

PAPER.. crazy guy... Go canvas at least.. with a continuos feed inkjet.... I saw one down the market... great if you are doing heaps of printing... Some you can keep pouring in the ink as it runs out. But even canvas is expensive... I doubt if you could work out the shape of the image to form a dome.. a circle is much easier and doable but even then i would print it in parts and link it together.. So, I guess you will change an entry fee..
$$$ Actually, what you might be able to do is... print the flat are up to the sky line or just above and then get an artist in that does art spray painting.. like for cars.. some of them are really good so they should be able to make up a sky and blend it in from the printed media..

Chris - the most important item you didn´t mention (as far as i remember): how big it must be? When more than one person can enter it it has to be somewhat large, does it.
I saw a printer for very big canvas of around 8x8m in one piece. It´s kind of a parallelogram having a printer-head moving which is getting colors from 4-6 man-size flasks and uses
air-pressure for printing.
This way you might be able to use a hemi-spherical distorted projection printed in one piece on the flat surface - which gets un-distorted by mounting the print on the igloo-cage.
Of course you need to match the correct size for the canvas and print to be mounted on the igloo-cage while keeping the images proportions without fall of the folds.
That´s a VERY expensive experiment! Would be much easier to use a cylindrical arrangement.
In the end it depends on the size.

Yes and no.
Yes, the igloo must be big. For one person to be comfortable, 2 meter in heigth, better 3. For more persones it should be at least 4 meters in heigth.
No, the paper slices i need are smaller, much smaller. Looking at http://www.boehmwanderkarten.de/themen/ … e_9_hf.jpg each slice could be a own paper sheet, on the order of about 1 meter by 4 meter, from paper roll. Print size 8 meter by 8 meter is not really needed.
Print roll width 1 meter is a not-so-exotic dimension nowadays, print roll width 50 cm has every second print and copy shop.
Yes, it will become expensive. But not excessivly expensive.
And something cylindrical is already on my "silly idea list". Something like an advertising column, the picture outside or alternative inside (begehbare Litfasssäule).
greetings
