Making a gigapanorama 360 view

Hi everyone!

Im making an 360 view from top of an moutain. I will go and capture the pictures next week.
Im using Canon 5D mark II, on a Gigapan Epic Pro rig.

You have some tips for me? - I need alot depth, so i can zoom later on. So im thinking about shooting with a 200mm or a 300 mm. Full 360 view.

Ive done some test, but in Autopano Giga, i cant save/render it at full size. I must down to 30 %. Because it cant render image over 30.000 or 60.000 pix.
Is it overkill with a 200mm then? Or? Can someone explain me this? smile

Also haveing problems with the focus, on manual, the thinks in fromt of me are not in focus witch looks not good on the final image.
If i use auto focus, i get alot problem with the sky and other things where the camera can't find focus.

I really appreciate if you can give me some information smile

Hello,

Concerning Autopano capabilities, the size of the rendered picture depends of the file format. Some format have limitations on the size.
You can choose Photoshop format to obtain a PSB file that can be used in PTP if you want to.

Thomas

Ah psd... There  are two photoshop file types, psd and psb, psb is for large file types.  Tiff's max out at 2gigs and your pano with your rig will end up 6 to 7 gig. So have autopano save as psb.  Now for the funny stuff. I am not sure about panotour but since it uses the krpano license I think it might. When you try to save the pano and make the tiles you will get a layers error.  So before you waste your time, open your new psb file in photoshop, you will see that there is only one layer, lie.... flatten the image anyway and then save. Your 6 gig file is now only 1.5 gig and will be abled to be tiled.

Also, make sure you use the import wizard when loading the original files into autopano pro, this will tell autopano not use freeform, but to use a row-column for stitching, this is especially nice for areas like the sky.

Here are some giga pand I did with the same equipment you are using.  Also use M for exposure and set your speed to work for F7.1 to F11 max, also no autofocus.  I find infinity and then backed off a little is the sharpest.

http://rhmpano.com  - look for gigapixel projection on the sidebar.  Canon 5Dmk II Canon 300 f4 Gigapan pro,  krpano tools.

Ah amazing panos! smile Really nice! Just what i want to make.
I will have alot sky, so it's a challenge to stiched and to focus. If i set M focus, the things that are near will be out of focus.

I will take it from around here.

How neaer is near??  By shooting at f7.1 to 11 you have relatively good depth of field.  Are you shooting mountains or a close scene that has mountains in the background?

Re: Making a gigapanorama 360 view

there are many DOF calculators ...

Android: Photo Tools, DoF Calc, DOF Calculator
Photo Tools also does have an Hyperfocal Distance Calculator:

so
5Dmk2 + 200mm + F8 = >200m is sharp (hyperfocal)
5Dmk2 + 200mm + F11 = >146m is sharp (hyperfocal)
5Dmk2 + 200mm + F22 = >74m is sharp (hyperfocal)

5Dmk2 + 100mm + F8 = >50m is sharp (hyperfocal)
5Dmk2 + 100mm + F11 = >36m is sharp (hyperfocal)
5Dmk2 + 100mm + F22 = >18m is sharp (hyperfocal)

if you combine this with setting the focus point, than you can "enlarge" the sharp area:

5Dmk2 + 200mm + F8 = >200m is sharp (hyperfocal) + focus dist at 26m: >17m is sharp
5Dmk2 + 200mm + F11 = >146m is sharp (hyperfocal) + focus dist at 19m: >12m is sharp
5Dmk2 + 200mm + F22 = >73m is sharp (hyperfocal) + focus dist at 37m: >25m is sharp

5Dmk2 + 100mm + F8 = >50m is sharp (hyperfocal) + focus dist at 26m: >17m is sharp
5Dmk2 + 100mm + F11 = >36m is sharp (hyperfocal) + focus dist at 19m: >13m is sharp
5Dmk2 + 100mm + F22 = >18m is sharp (hyperfocal) + focus dist at 10m: >7m is sharp

and ;-) to find the correct distance theres nothing better than Golf Rangefinder GX-3 from Leupold (http://golf.leupold.com/ )...
