NN5 w/RD16-II vs M1-L w/RD16-II - Recommendations

Hello,

I been generating panoramas in the last 4 years, basically, by hand, using a tripod (eye-percent) and with a little robotic panoramic head (btw: not very useful); so, it is time to move forward and buy a real panoramic head.

Due I'm using a sort of heavy equipment to take panoramas (1DMKIII/100-400mm L) my options are limited, so, my plan is to buy a NN5 w/RD16-II (discontinued model), however I did notice that Fanotec has a new model M1-L w/RD16-II which cost twice the NN5.

My question for you guys is: with my current camera/lens configuration should I consider the M1-L w/RD16-II instead the NN5???

Thanks in advance for you advice...
R.

If you can find an NN5 second hand (as NN5 is now obsolete since a while and new units are no more avalaible), it would be best choice because as Ed indicated it, you won't be able to use your lens till 400mm with both NN4 and M1L due to fixed step on upper rail not compatible with so important focal length !). If you plan to keep under 100mm, you can then use NN4 for sure. If you buy NN5, be sure it's NN5 and not NN5L (as NN5L had fixed steps on upper rail and you would then get same issue as with NN4/M1L).

I may be mistaken but I thought it was the other way round.

I have an NN5L and it has no positive locks (fixed steps) on the pitch axis.

Whether the friction clamp (alone) would be enough to hold a 400mm lens with a heavy body is another matter?

I just received my NN5 (discontinued from Nodal Ninja and available as factory irregular) with a RDII-16 rotator, and everything works great, and... the vertical lock works as expected even with the camera/lens weight...

In some preliminary testing I was able to use 250mm and stitch the images with no problem... I need to do more testing to see if I can use more zoom or not, either way a multi-row 180 panorama using 200mm will take a while....
