3D printed bracket for Merlin head

I created the following bracket so I could use my Canon 600D and a Canon 10-22 lens and get them lined up correctly.

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/402/fablab3dpart.jpg

The bracket was 3D printed at the FabLab Airedale  in the UK.  Their Dimension 3D Printer prints using ABSplus plastic.

My first use of the bracket, camera and Merlin panohead was photographing the inside of Avro Vulcan XJ823 based at the Solway Aviation Museum near Carlisle.

Re: 3D printed bracket for Merlin head

Cleaver.. Great idea... I really love the stl format for 3D print.. I have a few things which I made in CAD and had printed in 3D.. Wonderful technology.. Did you know you can print in all kinds of material now, even rubber and metal.. Just amazing... We even did wax for the lost wax process I think its called to poor metal into sand where the wax melts and is replaced by the wax... We never go to the end result, we run out of money... There are 3D printers as small as a desk top printer now.. and not too expensive.. Its the raw material which cost a bit... Some use strands of plastic and others use a plaster stuff to print in full colour... The ABS is really strong...

Hi Zoran,

FabLab Airedale charged £38 to print the model. The pricing is based on volume of material used (50p per cubic centimeter) It took about three and half hours to print. If the camera and lens being used was not that heavy (my setup is about 1kg) I think you could reduce the 3d model a bit and get the price down to something like £25 to £30.

The ABSplus fused deposition modeling used by the Dimension printers is strong but it is not as smooth as the selective laser sintering from the likes of Shapeways which I have also used.

regards,

Tony

Thanks a lot. Maybe it's a better and cheapest solution than new/modification crown + bracket. You should be offer you model (or models) to the market.

Regards,

Zoran.

I watched this bird arrive at Carlisle Airport many years ago, we watched it touch down and roll along the runway, it appeared to be about to crash off the end of the runway before the pilot gave it a last blast souring vertically up for a final circuit to burn off fuel,

Re: 3D printed bracket for Merlin head

Could you put the stl file (or better, source file) on Thingiverse?

Hi fma38 & Mateusz,

Please find below a link to the model. I've uploaded an STL and  3DS version.

Re: 3D printed bracket for Merlin head

Hi, we used the Dimension to have our stuff printed in 2006, their output is a little rough but not too bad.. Some are terrible.. There are quite a few techniques used with 3D printing by manufactures to achieve a 3D object. Some use a wax stuff for supports but that often cost more than the ABS raw plastics.. You also have to be aware of the toxic fumes etc, some of them are terrible. ZCorp make printers that can print in full colour but they are printed using Corn Starch or something like that.. They are only 3D representations of the the object, they cannot be used as a test piece, but I am assuming they have other machines now.. Dimension 3D printer output are able to be tested for use, as with other printers.. There is a nice one that cost about 5k that sits on your desk but the size of the models is very limited..

This one we were looking at buying for our school.. It uses a kind of whipper snipper thick line to print with.. It comes with heaps of colours too.. It looks a bit unfinished but it a nice tool and very cheap...

http://airwolf3d.com/store/products/ful … d-printer/

During the Gulf war, the US army had a huge 3D printer setup... If they needed a new carburettor for their Hummer, they printed it.. Their factory for this was in Kuwait, or so I was told.....

Destiny...

PS.. I watched a TV science program last year where they used the building blocks of the human heart to print a heart valve, they then put an electrical current through it and it pumped.. Just amazing. They also printed an ear.. yuck.. lollol

Re: 3D printed bracket for Merlin head

The guy that runs FabLab built one of the RepRap printers .... http://www.facebook.com/FabLabAiredale/photos_stream (scroll down a bit for the photo) he was saying the biggest factor on quality from RepRap is threaded rods used.

I liked the story about 8,800 3D-printed faces used in the stop motion film ParaNorman ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19520446  .... 3.77 tonnes of printer powder smile

Re: 3D printed bracket for Merlin head

one more for DIY friends & 3D printing:

https://shop.ultimaker.com/en/ultimaker … t-new.html
based on arduino driven board, can also take ABS plastic, but only objects 21x21x22cm can be created with a resolution of 0.0125 mm
