I have searched for several hours in vain, I am sure the answer is in here but I cant find it.
I have my bluetooth unit connected to the tronisoft rs232 to ttl convertor and I have the RJ plug stripped with the 220 ohm resistors wired to the tx and RX ports as per the excellent photos posted by others but I am concerned that the Merlin head appears to output 12v and the adapter is rated at 5V. I am presuming that i dont just wire the power from the head to the board or is that ok?
Many Thanks for any advice.

Welocme to the forum...
Is this the Tronisoft RS232-TTL adapter you have? With an onboard PSU?

Yes it is: I have looked up the PSU and it says it can handle more than the 9v it is rated for but might require a heatsink.
I dont often do this sort of thing and I have a tendancy to rush in and blow things up so I am deliberatley takinf it onecareful step at a time for once :-)
Thanks for your help.

I have/had one of these, back in the days when it was about the only option available, and it worked OK without any additional heatsink.
I've since moved on to using the much smaller and rather more convenient Deltawave PapyMerlin BT adapter (developed by ClaudeVH after protracted supply issues with Tronisoft):

Also marketed under the Panogear brand:
