Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

Hi all,

I would love to try and create a 360 video as a personal project but I'm struggling to find any tutorials or recommended software for creating them. I was curious to see if anybody here had done one, and if so, could you pass on any tips and advice!? big_smile

Cheers,

Ian.

p.s I have experience with creating standard 360 panos with Panotour Pro.

follow this thread... in speacial Geralds Link...

so I would wait until ptp2 (at Autokina) and the video plugin is available, or you need krpano method (www.krpano.com) or you need unbiblished kolor eyes and adobe after effects....

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

360 videos or video in a 360 panorama?

Personally I hate 360 video as one does not know where to look and will always miss more then half of what is there to be seen.

video in a 360 panorama is fine when used with care and when the video is short or can be (re)started.

Hi Georg,

Wow, pretty impressive, that's something else I would like to try!

But in my original post I was more referring to 360 video in the format of something like below:

http://www.sphericalimages.com/videos/l … time-lapse

I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether it is even possible to use my existing Canon DSLR, 8mm fish eye and NN2 to get something similar, I know it wouldn't be possible to do a time lapse every 30 secs like in the example above because of the physical restraints of turning the Ninja, but maybe one every couple of mins?

And then, the question is which software can put it all together? I see that Kolor are involved in the Girocam camera, but I don't think this 360 video feature a part of Panotour Pro.....

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

if I remember well it was stated that the london eye video was shot with the girocam
http://www.kolor.com/girocam-360-camera … kolor.html
If you look during night at nadir area you can see the shadow of the girocam made by the moon....

so 3000 panos  made of 3 images each and than with adobe after effects creating the video...

this should be possible with ptp2 too. the preview does not say the video part of the pano has to be limited to one "hotspot" ;-)))

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

Yes, that was a great post and that's actually what got me to thinking about the possibilities of doing something similar with standard kit.

So has anybody come across this being done without a girocam or one-shot type of device? I imagine it's not technically possible.

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

it is, but its a huge project to plan and to realize it...

a mac only solution & gopro cams inclusive how it was done:
http://punkoryan.com/2011/02/08/shootin … ro-cameras

a 5 GoPro with wireless remote:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he3dM1WecPg

I remember also that such a solution for helis does exist
and for the go pro a solution also exists that the release button can be triggered simultanously for all gopros via remote control (have no link any more)

AND - just found a really nice wow... equipped with 6 gopros... so 6 x gopro2 should be even more possible than the 4000x2000 video or the 10000x5000 stills:
http://360rig.com/future_of_array_cameras/
and a demo with a nearly perfectr invisibel nadir and not so bad image quality - better than the girocam...:
http://nypano.com/clients/360video/index.html

with only one camera trying to shoot a 360x180 video I think will fail (ghosts of walking people, wind & moving trees, moving cars etc.)

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

Thanks for your many posts Georg, lots of great information there. Much appreciated.

I think then for the time being I am going to dig out my 5 year-old 1-360 one-shot lens and just have a play around with that and see what I can come up with. Will obviously be a bit low resolution but fine for practising. I'll post a link here if I manage to create anything half decent.

We are doing behind the scene work about this rig together with Joergen.

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

Some really great links to some really cool stuff.. Real pity that the GiroCAM is a bit of a CAN, it really needs 3 more camera lenses to take up the nadir slack and then perhaps it could be a really useful tool in 360 VId.... I really take my hat of to the boys with that very innovative technique in capturing the 360 video.. From great innovations like will come really cool technology which we can all use.. I think that the next couple of years will see a boom in new and exciting software and hardware technologies in the 360 VRs and 360 Vid VRs.. And what makes it even more exciting is the fact that the guys at kolor can see this too and are doing things rather then just talking about it.. I would love to be fly on the wall in their meeting room.. The mind can only boggle at the ideas they have come up with behind the scenes.... wink

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

Alexandre did show a next step version of the rig at photokina.
you can see the wholes in it to better handle the heat. which is still a problem. so a next version will be developed which can solve this.
the cams do synchronized video recording and work is going on to handle the gopros auto whitebalancing.
gopro hd2 image quality .. so 360videos but also 360 still images can be taken.
a remote control does exist (second - unsharp - screenshot) so you can start/stop taking sequenzed (images/videos)

the above shown video does work on IE9 too (with google frame plugin) and also one of kolor eyes demo video (the CGI apartement walk)
and with IE10 (I expect) tha koloreyes is natively be supported.

Re: Anybody done a 360 Video yet?

I also had a closer look at this solution during Photokina. Due to the heat issue I wouldn't buy one yet. In addition one of the Kolor representatives showed me the software that Kolor has developed to produce the 360 video, I was very impressed at how straightforward the software was to use.

Hi Ian!

That´s solvable by using different materials. Works ok nevertheless.

Right - that´s definitely very impressive. Fast working and fluent handling - i was excited. Excellent!
