Clubic.com, France’s reference online magazine in the IT field (4.6 million visitors per month) has just interviewed photographers and bloggers and asked them to select their favorite software applications in the photography field. We’re proud to announce that Autopano was selected as the best panorama software. “The result is just stunning”, points out the magazine. “Autopano Pro software is certainly the most famous in terms of image stitching”.

A 360 virtual tour of the ruins of Leptis Magna

National Geographic has just published a new virtual tour of the ruins of Leptis Magna, available on iPads.

This virtual tour allows you to explore the ruins of Leptis Magna, one of Libya’s ancient Roman cities, a place that is very hard to visit, just like you were standing there.

Corey Jaskolski is an engineer, specializing in creating technologies for some of the most challenging environments on Earth. He is currently developing new imaging solutions to help National Geographic explorers—and others—capture imagery that lets us all see the world in new ways. He took part in the exploration of the wreck of the Titanic. To realize this project in Lybia, he developped a motorized system (similar to the products we offer) in order to automate the process.

It took only 12 minutes to shoot hundreds of photographs.

Thanks to the Gyrometer of the iPad, you can explore the ruins with an amazing realism and discover the entire city. According to Corey Jaskolski this kind of project gives a new dimension in photography. These new type of virtual images are particularly powerful in a world where we’re inundated with photographs. It creates more impact and interest in addition to give to people at large the opportunity to discover places that are almost unaccessible.

The magazine DigitalPhoto.de in its January 2013 issue, Thomas Bredenfeld, expert in panoramic photography, underlines that panoramic photography is gaining in popularity & appears in the forefront of the photographic scene. Photographers, may they be amateur or professionnal can find more & more hardware & software solutions at their disposal.

After stating the various hardware and software tools available today, the article is accompanied by a case study. Thomas Bredenfeld explains what “image stitching” means and goes through the different steps to create a nice panoramic photo thanks to Autopano Giga:

Autopano Giga automates the detection of images. A simple drag & drop of your images and Autopano Giga will start to analyze them. It will assign links (with the use of significant points called control points) in order to stitch them.
If your panorama seems perfectible, the Control Points Editor will allow you to manually edit the links and the Control Points to achieve an optimal alignment of the source images. In some cases the automatic stitching mode will have trouble aligning some images, and will even exclude some of them from the panorama.

[Autopano review] Le monde de la photo N°45 special feature about stitching

In its issue of May 2012, French magazine “le monde de la photo” presents a 30 page feature on image stitching.

This feature provides an overall view of existing solutions and shots techniques: How to create a Gigapixel, which geometrical projections to choose, 10 tips for starting and frequent asked questions about stitching. A part of the feature is dedicated to Autopano pro/Giga, which is viewed as the reference in stitching software. According to the magazine it automates a lot of functions and allows advanced users to retake control at anytime if they need to.
