[Panotour Pro 2.0] Case study #2: Hotels and accommodations | Steve Henderson photographer

For this second case study, Steve Henderson photographer uses the virtual tour and Panotour Pro 2.0 for promoting interest of Antunovińá Hotel and Congress Centre of Zagreb¬†(Croatia). Let us meet with this talented photographer!

Steve, could you introduce yourself?

Steve Henderson photographerOriginally from England, but for the last 2 years I have been living in¬†the northern region of Croatia, where I recently began working as a¬†photographer. My first steps in photography began as a child when¬†my parents bought me a Polaroid instant camera.. I remember that¬†from each film I could only get 12 exposures, so I had to be very¬†careful about not wasting shots! Of course, today’s digital world is¬†very different and the current advances in web-based viewing has¬†now opened up an exciting and expanding market for great quality¬†high-resolution images and interactive virtual tours. So¬†professionally, this is where most of my efforts are now being¬†directed.

Kolor team really liked the virtual tour of Antunovińá Hotel, congratulations! What did you do to achieve this result?

For this particular project, the client was very specific about which areas were to be included in the final virtual tour. Unusually though, it took several visits over a number of weeks to complete all of the necessary shots as many of the rooms were not available at one time. Because of this extended time frame, it made real sense for me start using Panotour Pro 2.0. Even from an initial look at the new software, I was very impressed at the extra features and enhancements. Particulary welcome is the various control bar, menu design options and other graphical elements that can be easily incorporated to create very quickly a sophisticated but user friendly final tour.

Case study #2: Hotels | Steve Henderson photographer

The aim here was to create a simple and uncluttered user interface¬†that maintained the predominently red/white colour scheme of the¬†client’s corporate image. The original tour build included:

  • Panorama menu (white) overlaying a coloured footer (red).¬†Panoramas organised into logical ‘groups’ with individually¬†coloured submenus
  • Hotel logo at the bottom right
  • Header consisting of a coloured area with transparency, title¬†bar, and two coloured (white) areas to provide the thin lines
  • Vertical control bar with transparency and black icons
  • Hotspot arrows using inbuilt theme
  • Video and sound hotspots added to the first panorama.

During the course of my experience using Panatour Pro 2.0, I started to think about a number of things, such as:

  • How nicely structured are the generated xml files
  • The different ways a user can interact with the tour
  • What extra features may Kolor add in the future?
  • The potential power of the open plugin development environment
  • How can I promote my own business by creating something a little¬†different?

My thoughts led me to start modifying the generated xml files.¬†Firstly, I created some extra visual interest by animating the¬†individual scenes. Then, by adding some audio to fit the ‘camera’¬†movements, I could extend the concept by creating an automated tour¬†feature that could be played as a kind of mini movie. The idea was¬†that this could be used as a looping backdrop, for example on a big¬†screen at conferences, publicity and sales events.

Further editing gave more flexibility to the tour, so the control bar now includes:

  • A button that is used to display information panels for each of¬†the panorama groups
  • A ‘Play tour’ button that presents a complete animated tour of¬†the whole hotel
  • A ‘Play scene animation’ button that animates the currently¬†viewed scene
  • A button to enable/disable animation when viewing the tour

Other modifications include: a customized cursor, a lighting effect¬†feature in Beethoven Hall, title bar to show a combined group and¬†panorama name, a sliding graphic to show animation is in progress.¬†As a final touch I placed the tour in a single responsive HTML page¬†that includes some extra information and navigation help. The client¬†is very pleased with this initial preview and has now extended the¬†project scope. The final tour will receive additional panoramas and¬†I’ll apply a couple of tweaks to modify some of the behaviour.¬†It would be great to see in the future someone develop a plugin for¬†Panotour Pro 2.0 that creates and extends the features I’ve used here.

Do you have other projects you would like to share with us?

Together with Autopano Giga 3.0, Panotour Pro 2.0 will be provide the¬†key software component in many of my planned and anticipated¬†future projects. Presently, I am actively initiating and pursuing those¬†that highlight to both residents and visitors alike, the sporting,¬†cultural and historical attractions of Zagreb and it’s wonderful¬†surrounding countryside. The area is very diverse, a unique mixture¬†of urbanised centres with traditional villages and vineyards set amidst¬†an enchanting, undulating, deeply-forested landscape. Also, as a¬†personal goal I shall be using Panatour Pro 2.0 to show more of what¬†this relatively little known area has to offer.
