[Panotour Pro 2.0] Case study #1: Promotion of tourism | Xavier Spertini photographer

Wednesday 7 August 2013

Kolor is pleased to publish online the first post blog (hopefully the first of a long series) entitled “Case Study”. Its purpose is various:

  • Enhance and highlight the work of a photographer
  • Present the results obtained with our software solutions and present business field where they can be applied
  • To put the photographer in touch with potentials customers

For this first case study, Xavier Spertini professional photographer uses the virtual tour and Panotour Pro 2.0 for promoting interest of the region of the Haute-Maurienne (Savoie, France). Let us meet with this talented photographer and discover the Haute-Maurienne!

Xavier, could you introduce yourself ?
I am from Bourges (center area of France). I started photography in 2004, when I moved in Savoie. When I came living here, I was amazed by moutains scenery, but also by the variety of heritages which contains the area of Maurienne and fell in love with panoramic photography. My interests are mainly focused on natural landscapes, medieval and modern architecture and industrial heritage. Finally anything that carries a significant historical past …

Do you have other projects you would like to share with us? What are your future plans in panoramic photography?

I am currently working on a project of virtual memory of an old coal production site in the center of France. This is a project that combines a virtual tour of the coal production site before its demolition, oral testimonies of workers and compilation of archival documents.

Kolor team really loved the virtual tour of the Haute-Maurienne, congratulations! What did you do to achieve this result?

The aim of this virtual tour is to present some views of a region to which I am attached and demonstrate my skills and my photographic approach in some specific conditions (full moon, snow, low lighting). I firstly shot a series of panoramas including the different types of assets that can be discovered in Haute-Maurienne thanks to its natural, religious and military heritage. Then I secondly had a session under the full moon, the tripod in snow. By using Panotour Pro 2.0, I wanted to create a simple interface to showcase the panoramas while having a pleasant browsing experience in the virtual tour.

From a technical point of view, I used colour gradient and transparency effects for the interface. I added very few external components and icons in Panotour Pro 2.0 ie a hotspot icon, a photo gallery, social networks button, the title and finally a simple text for credit.

From a functional point of view, the tour includes the following:

- A drop down list of panoramas menu, sorted by “groups”
- A background interactive map, thanks to BingMaps
- A gallery of panoramic photos
- A button to share on social networks
- A function “Next – Prev” on the sides of the interface, to change the view,
- A control bar
- A little customization of the cursor menu

From a visual point of view, I’ve added a thin white lines (colored area), as well as colour gradient (footer) in order to highlight titles and icons. I made myself a small change (in XML file) to customize a bit buttons “Previous and Next”. I hope that the result is nice looking…

What kind of equipment should we get to make a virtual tour of this quality?

Camera and lens Accessories Software
  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II
  • Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye for the 360°
