The European Southern Observatory has just published a 9 Gigapixel image of the Milky Way. This new image has allowed to locate 84 million stars in the central parts of the Milky Way.
VISTA infrared survey telescope collected all the data in order to create a 108 100 by 81500 pixels image. This enormous dataset is an impressive leap over previous similar studies, containing more than ten times the stars of previous work.
A virtual tour made with Panotour Pro is available on the website of the ESO, here.
